Hello Chris,

I'm glad you are sceptical too- when listening to and watching the BBC, sceptics are made to feel about as close to reality as Flat Earthers. You won't be giving up your twice yearly flights to Plakias any time soon then!

Mike

ps. move over and let Mandy have a turn.

This is Zakros The Valley of the Dead.

Back to the Global Warming theme, then I would be interested to know how all these experts think the economies of islands such as Crete are going to prosper if many of us get taxed out of flying?

Stuart

I have read that the economy of Crete is stable and sufficient that it can survive if not a single tourist visits. Tourists are a welcome but none essential bonus. That of course does not apply to many other places world wide.

Kato Zakros it is, the valley of the dead..... i thought that one would last longer

i'm sure crete on the whole would survive because of it's massive agricutural industry, in fact anyone who has been to the far east of the island will tell you of the miles and miles and miles of olive groves out there, but i wonder about places like plakias which are really almost completely given over to tourism now

Global Warming.

Quite right Chris. I have been going abroad on holiday since 1970 and have witnessed the remarkable increase in living standards that tourism has brought (plus EU subsidies).

If you believe the more alarmist global warming predictions, then many of the Med. resorts will become virtually uninhabitable because of the heat, so everyone will want to live and holiday further north.

That Channel 4 programme was mighty convincing and many contributors had what appeared to be impeccable pedigrees. Hardly flat earthers.

Air travel/global warming

If the need for CO2 reduction is accepted, taxation is not an answer. Pricing Joe Soap from the skies will reduce the number of close to full aircraft, but retain all the half empty or worse flights used by business and the well heeled. As for the Tory idea of 2,000 miles green allowance, which will get you to Portugal, Spain and Italy, but not Greece or Cyprus, I can’t see it getting past EU scrutiny.

If temperatures rise, would that not make our summer holiday spots in the Med into winter holiday destinations, far more affordable than the Caribbean, Seychelles etc.?

I think the big problem would be rising sea levels making many coastal resorts untenable

Not if the Channel 4 programme last week is correct. Mighty persuasive it was and the pedigrees of the contributors were impeccable. I'm not an expert so can't know who is right; I just don't think it is as cut and dried as many people say.

Some others on the forum must be old enough to remember the 1970s when the climatology flavour of the week was that the next ice age was imminent.
