Beer, Beer we want more beer

I've been going to Greece for over 20 years and for all that time Amstel has been available but I only remember Mythos in latter years. Is this right? I'm sure someone will know.

I think I agree with Chas about real ale not going well in Greece, although I haven't tried it there.

I don't normally drink alcohol on the plane but a few years ago I did as the captain sent out 2 rounds of free drinks to compensate for the plane being about 50 meals short and a delay on take-off. I chose Stella Artois which I hadn't tried before (I'm not a lager drinker except in Greece). To my taste it was markedly inferior to the Amstel I had been drinking in Greece.

Mythos, Alfa and the lesser-known Greek beers have only been around for the last 10 years at the most. When I first started going to Greece (17 years ago), Amstel was the only beer available in a lot of places, but some had Heineken as well. There was nothing else. Pumps were a rarity and I don't remember cans, so it was all bottles. The bottles then were 500ml and 300ml (smaller than the present 330ml).

When I first visited Greece (Thasos) in 1972, there seemed to be only two beers available in the tavernas. A greek beer whose name I cannot remember and a beer named Falcon. This tasted much better. Both were sold in 50cl bottles and if I remember correctly, the greek one was 10 drachma and the Falcon 11 drachma. A good dinner could be had for 15 to 20 drachma and wine was half the price of beer. Happy days!

The Falcon was brewed in Greece, but was owned by either Amstel or Oranjeboom.

Thanks for confirming my memory re. Mythos being relatively recent. The other local beer widely available when I first visited about 20 years ago was Henninger, but I haven't seen it for years. If you wanted something brewed in Greece it was Amstel or Henninger.

Thinking back to our early visits (1980 on), the choice was between bottled Henniger and draught Watneys Red Barrel (both imported) ..... I have seen the odd Henniger in recent years but (thank goodness) no Red Barrel

I thought I mentioned it somewhere above ....

Rumour factory:  the Fix brewery was "closed" a few years back because of "corruption" and "tax evasion" ..... however, I have seen a few empty crates and bottles in the last twelve months - the one place that was open had no stock left - just empties  :'(

IMHO, it's less "sticky" than Mythos but not quite as sharp as Alfa - still a good drink

Personally I found the Amstel seemed to be gassier than the Mythos, so I preferred the latter. I also assumed that the Amstel wasn't local, so again I chose the Mythos.
