i might be on my own on this, but we visited Kournas lake for the first time this september, admittedly not the empire cafe, we went to the lakeside and to be honest i thought it was like blackpool

You are not on your own. We visited it once some years back and vowed never again. Eventually (perhaps sadly) there will be  large and perhaps beautiful lake on Crete when the Amari Valley Dam is finally sealed. Looking at buildings gradually being abandoned and a profusion of diversion roads being built this year I'm wondering if the communities have settled their differences and that the flooding is going to happen fairly soon ?

For us Lake Kournas was a bit disappointing but by walking round the lake a bit you could get away from the pedalos and people. Two high points - a cool swim in the lake and coming face to face with a water snake

I totally agree with all the above comments, the bottom of the hill is a bit commercialised, perhaps it's an off shoot from Georgiopolis, that's why I go there from the top and leave from the top. But it's still worth a visit and it's never been busy in the Empire, so it's ideal for a quiet lunch and a beer or two, while looking at the view and hopefully the birds.

New harbour?
No trees were killed in the posting of this message but a large number of electrons became terribly excited.

If you look at the board without logging in, you don't see the pictures but see the names of them: empire_cafe_1.jpg etc.
Greecemad
I'll keep that in mind for the next time Greecemad, maybe something cryptic just to make it a bit more interesting  , now you know where to look!
