Just to add to the confusion over the new beach bars, there are actually two new ones this year, I believe, both built by brothers from Paligremnos.  One is small and immediately in front of Paligremnos and the other which is under construction now is right in front (i.e. on the sea side) of the sand dunes half way between Paligremnos and Plakias Bay Hotel.
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=3669\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]
These development are slightly worrying. A beach bar isn't necessarily a problem but we like the far end as it has been until now.

Continuing the topic of the beach bars, while we were there two weeks ago, construction started on the beach bar at the far end, between the dunes parallel to the parking bay just down from the Plakias Bay Hotel. The guy from Paligremnos came up and went nuts at the builder guys, so I don't think it's his doing. I also heard him talking to some Paligremnos guests about being nervous because every time he turned around there was another beach bar being built. And the day of the big barney, as we were leaving the beach two policemen arrived to talk to the builder guys as if there had been a protest about the construction, and again I'm assuming that complaint was made by Mr Paligremnos. Freddie from the beach started off saying it would just sell drinks, and then that extended to become maybe sandwiches, and maybe pizza . . .! It will spoil the atmosphere of the far end irrevocably as far as I can see. And talk about a blot on the landscape! I've got pictures which I'll try to attach. Wish me luck!

I still can't work out the location of this bar!
I'm a bit confused as well. It looks quite close to the road so shouldn't be too obtrusive for those on the beach. What is the building on the far right hand side of photo 1? Is it Palegremnos or Plakias Bay Hotel?

Regarding Graham and Karen's concerns, I was there in May for the first time in 10 years (before the second of the new beach bar constructions admittedly) but thought the far end had hardly changed. Just a few more umbrellas/sunbeds, but these were being well used.

OK, so pic one - I took it as we were leaving the far end beds. You know if you were leaving the beach and had to choose between taking the path along to the left to Paligremnos or going straight ahead to the parking bay on the road just down from the Plakias Bay Hotel? The beach bar is right there in the gap. Pic two is taken from that parking bay which is just before the road curves up the last wee bit to the Plakias Bay Hotel. Get it? Lying on a bed in the back row about five along from the far end shower, we were able to watch and hear them building it, that's how close it is. As someone said, it is so not good news.

Latest news - there is no longer a new beach bar!!!  It would appear that permission had not been granted and it has now been demolished.  There's never a dull moment here.

Good to hear that the finika officials do not tolerate things like this ... I hope it will not harm a poor man!  Worst thing about this building was that it has been the first trial to "jump over the street" and who knows what would be planned next?!
It´s so great to carry all the bottles of water and juice [for the whole day and four persons] bread and fruit from the local stores in plakias to the very end of the bay.
And to know: Leftheris´Donuts will be served on an unpredictable hour of the day.  The hunger grows ... and then you hear his whispers...  carried by the wind from still far away... That´s my culinarical dream of the farend days.  And I´m not joking!

Thanks for the good  news

The translation of Mikro Amoudi and Amoudaki is the same thing: "Small Amoudi", so the two names mean the same thing and probably are both used. I like the photograph of it as there seem to be no ranks of umbrellas. I hope that it's still like that when I arrive around about the 21st June (I am working on Greek time!)

Well I guess you've found out by now ... when I was last there back in the late 20th century they had installed sunbeds, umbrellas and even a shower, not at all like the old days ...

BTW the description of this beach in the Rough Guide to Crete seems unchanged from the first edition of the Rough Guide to Greece, 1980-something, even down to the "Nivea beach balls".  Anyone ever spotted one of them?

i honestly couldn't remember where i'd seen the other 'new' beach bar so i zoomed in on one of my pics from the headlands at the far end

this is opposite the pelgramnos, which i assume is still there
