Re the far end of Plakias beach.
Its just a question i have been asked but is the far end an official naturist beach, or is it just accepted as that? Not that i can see an afternoon "raid" by the anti nude brigade ! they have to pass all the new beach bars first! Yes i go nude and the only time i don't is when the locals turn up and would not want to upset them.

I take your point Roger. To be honest, I've not been to Souda other than when it's been very quiet. I'm not advocating baring all once the pattern for the beach has been established for the day but if I were there bright and early I'd be tempted to go down the Plakias end of the beach nude in the hope that, at least for that day, nude bathing at that end would be acceptable. If I found, later on, that we were in a minority of 2, I'd either cover up or move on. I actually think Plakias far end and Micro Amoudi beaches are better than other nearby alternatives anyway so that's where we tend to go.

I am not sure there really are any official naturist beaches, only accepted ones. I thought that being naked was against the greek law.

Some slightly worrying news, is that there is a beach bar being built at the far end of Plakias beach. No one seems to know who is building it or whether the bar staff will be nude?

one thing is for certain that the staff WON'T be nude!

actually IIRC the 'new' beach bar is not encroaching on the far end and is between the slightly older 'new' beach bar and the town, i wouldn't mind someone confirming this though

Harribobs is right. There is no beach bar being constructed at the "far end". This area has hardly changed in 10 years, except there are a few more umbrellas.

I keep agreeing with Harribobs! It isn't official but Plakias far end is an accepted clothes optional beach. It is quite acceptable to queue for your doughnuts au naturel. Only minor downside seems to be a few local voyeuristic lads on occasion after the schools have finished. I would estimate ca. 80% of occupants were naked in May.

I heard that Scala beach was raided in 2002. Apparently many local traders are furious as trade has significantly dropped off. Shame, as it was one of my favourites.

How is Frangokastello beach these days?  Not exactly local to Plakias but on the same side of the island at least.

Last time I visited (over 10 years ago) it was totally deserted apart from half a dozen unclothed folk at the far end.  Totally undeveloped, hundreds of metres of sand-dunes.

BTW I also met a couple who'd been stuck there for three days through failing to guess the time the bus would turn up ...

When we went there a couple of years ago, there was a sign saying 'No nude sunbathing' or similar. Disappointing really seeing as we were the only ones on the beach.

I can confirm the new beach bar is at the far end of the bay as we have been watching it's construction from our apartment behind Paligremnos.

Is the new establishment really at the far end of the beach right in the dunes or at the beach with the sea licking the barefoot soles of the custumers on their barchairs?? Or is just beneath the road? Which size has the bar ? And what´s about the dresscode on far end beach now. Not so many good news about the area in recent times...

Walk to the sea front - possibly pausing for a drink at the taverna.  Turn left and keep walking with the sea on your right hand side.  As you walk around the headland you will see the beach below you.  You quite literally can't miss it.

Sorry I haven't replied sooner.

Thank you Allan, shinaria and harribobs for the directions.  (Shinaria, you "photo-map" was especially useful.)  I think that I will print them all off and take them with me so I won't get lost while over there.

Karen, nice to hear from you.  It's unlikely that I will be hiring a car: I'll probably take the "train" to Damnoni as I don't see myself walking there from Plakias.

I'm back home now and it's raining.

There IS a small beach bar near the far end. I didn't take much notice of it, but it is not to be confused with a larger beach bar which I think was opened last year and is about half way along the beach - that one was open well into the night.

The sunbeds stretch almost right to the end of the beach, further than in some years. However there is a big gap in the middle so there's plenty of room for those that just want to lie on the sand. I think there are more stones about getting into the sea than what I can remember from before.

Someone asked about where they could sunbathe nude in isolation. I've heard that along the road from Plakias to Souda there are various small bits of beach amongst the rocks where you can sunbathe without being seen.

Greecemad describes the situation I found in May. Plenty of room to erect a beach tent or own umbrella. On some days nearly all the for hire sunbeds/umbrellas were taken, in marked contast to elsewhere on the beach.

Just to add to the confusion over the new beach bars, there are actually two new ones this year, I believe, both built by brothers from Paligremnos.  One is small and immediately in front of Paligremnos and the other which is under construction now is right in front (i.e. on the sea side) of the sand dunes half way between Paligremnos and Plakias Bay Hotel.

These development are slightly worrying. A beach bar isn't necessarily a problem but we like the far end as it has been until now.
