I still want to know what's on Gavdos to warrant a ferry!!!

george...
Gavdos is a particularly quiet and beautiful island, it has a number of beautiful beaches and a dearth of tourists.although it is 30 years or more since I visited the island the lack of any real links to civilisation have probably ensured that it remains a quiet backwater. In the short time I was on the island I only met a handful of tourists (Germans) and the locals were genuinely pleased to see me.

If you ever do make it to the island George, it is unlikely that you will be disappointed. The tranquillity and general ambience to be found on the island are probably what most visitors to Plakias are searching for. Imagine you had borrowed Dr who's tardis and transported yourself back to Plakias before the tourists arrived and you will have some idea of what it's like.

But as you said Dimitri, that was 30 years ago. I want an incentive to go there now!

that's just it George, it's very probably, virtually the same as it was when I left it.if I remember correctly the boat only ran in the summer. Most  visitors would rather lie on the beach than spend time on a dilapidated boat chugging over to Gavdos.there Were three other people on the boat with me, I don't think they ever had to contend with hordes of tourists arriving. There was nobody else on the beach when I was there, in fact a bit like Plakias when I first arrived. As I said imagine Plakias with only the fishermen and if that's your idea of heaven, then it's a place for you. Go on and do something different this year, you might even enjoy it.

Nice to know that someone is taking advantage of the new facilities in Plakias. Do you know how long the trip takes?

Just a thought, I've never been there or know anything about the island, what's on there?

We were staying at Gio Mas late June, we watched the  Gavdos star approaching Plakias  and by the amount of exhaust it was churning out we thought it was steam powered! we then went to the new harbour to see it come in and we thought Laurel and Hardy must have been at the helm, when they were trying to turn it round! When they managed to point it in the right direction the crew member who was mooring it didn't seem to know how to fasten it to the bollard. We decided to stay in Plakias and not bother with Gavdos on this occasion

Great website Alex. I was enchanted by Gavdos when we went for the day a few years ago.
Might have to try and go back this year.

We were going to go a couple of years ago, but if I remember right you only got about an hour there before the last boat back, where did you go from?

Cheers     Alex

We went direct from Plakias when Leftheris was running the trip on Sundays (I think)
We went to the lighthouse and then had a good few hours at Sarakinikos Beach (I have never swam in such a warm and shallow bay... divine)

I guess if we go on the ferries we'll have to try staying a night or two. Haven't checked the timetables yet.

I understand from the Sfakia forum that the larger Gavdos ferry supposed to be running from the new Plakias harbour never got started due to non compliance with regulations. No idea about the local smaller trips from Plakias
