Diving in Plakias
« on: January 11, 2007, 01:59:33 PM »
Hello everyone. Well, we've done it. We have booked our first holiday to Plakias! We will be staying the first 2 weeks of July. My husband used to be a keen diver. He hasn't done much in the last few years, because of back problems and lack of time. He has turned to cycling instead. However, he would like to dive again this summer. Also, our teenage kids would like to have a go at diving. Does anyone have any experience with the dive centre in Plakias ?

Hi,

Near Plakias there are several excellent places for diving. One of the best is Shinaria beach ± 5 km from Plakias. Most diving clubs go there.

There is 2nd diving school in Plakias "dive2gether run by a Dutch family. It might be convenient for "Belgen"

Thanks for the tip, Leen! A Dutch diving school might indeed be practical for Belgians, especially Flemish ones, like me. However, my husband is Danish and although he has learnt Dutch over the years and I have learnt Danish, we still speak English together most of the time. Language, therefore, isn't an issue. The quality of the dive school is more important, particularly their attention to safety issues.

I am sure safety is observed as they run a diving school in Holland as well

This is there Crete website:

Last year I was planning on diving with the Dutch Dive school but I didn't want to take the time to learn it during my vacation in Plakias.

This year, I plan on diving with them in the second week of July.

One thing I learned on my first trip to Plakias last year, is that the Dutch Dive school are shore divers.
I have only dived a few times off of a boat in the Bahamas where I became a certified Open Water diver, so I am looking forward to this new adventure.

I'm excited and eager to see if the beauty of Plakias above water is matched under water.

I have just arrive back from Plakias today.

I wanted to give an update to this thread.

Instead of diving with the Dutch team at Dive Together, I instead decided to dive with the crew at Kalypso.

http://www.kalypsodivingcenter.com/eng/courses.htm

I was less than impressed with the attention to safety.
It was shocking to me given my instructor on my Check Out dive in the Bahamas who paid
particular attention to this important detail in my training.

I suppose they expect you should be responsible for your own equipment (even if it is a rental)
and your own safety.

However, even while on the second dive I didn't feel as secure as our dive master lead the way but did
little to communicate or check our condition.

Beware.
