This website is amazing, it has lovely videos taken from a helicopter going around the coast of Crete including all of the Plakias area and a hell of a lot more.....

then on the homepage enter destination: Plakias and press go. The screen eill then show a map including Crete with all videos marked in red. Click your mouse onto the coast between Hora Sfakion and Galini then click the little screen/box thingy to play video.

Enjoy Plakias then go where you will, Have fun, its absolutely free.

OK I will do my best.The taverna is on the eastern side of the Apokoronas peninsular, the nearest small town/large village is Kefalas. Between Kefalas and Drapanos, there is a small village called Paleloni. Coming northwards from Kefalas toward Drapanos, turn right at Paleloni. This little road winds downward to the sea and at the very end of the road is the taverna. It is called Ombrosgialos.

This memorial is slightly to the west of Ano Viannos.  I remember the time when a resistance leader, not a part of Viannos but inland from there was led to the impression, wrongly, that the British were about to invade and liberate the island. He conducted an attack on a German patrol in the mountains and killed around a hundred of them.

The reprisal for this attack was conducted by General Meuller  and centred on Ano Viannos and the surrounding villages. The Germans moved into Viannos and murdered everyone, men women and children, that they found there. They continued into several villages around Viannos with equal ferocity.

When I was there there even in 1966 there was a strange air of uncertainty, of fear.

Hi Graham and Karen,

Your post really surprises me. Elafonisi is probably the most beautiful beach on the whole of Crete and the area around Elafonisi is one of Crete's protected areas. It is an astonishing place, Elafonisi and Chrisoskalitissa.

Our friends wanted to see the pink sands at Elafonissi and,as we fancied a meal in Chania in the evening, we decided to give it a try. We got there in just under 3 hours. The roads were fine - scenery interesting but not quite as stunning as the road down to Paleochora. Good points - nice sand and it's on the E4 walking route so you can do some exploring on foot from there. It's kept very clean and, although busy immediately in front of the car park and close to the island, it's a large beach and there's plenty of space 100 yds north and south for everyone. The photo below was taken from the south side.
Minus points are: the distance, obviously. Also, the sand, although pink in places, was not the 'natural miracle' mentioned in some information we read. So, ok if you really like driving and combine it with something else but we wouldn't go again.

Early last year the Euro was around 70p per Euro. This was good. Now that it is 79p per Euro or so it is very bad for people - mostly English, converting to Euros.

It means that one Euro used to cost 70p and now it costs 79p. This means that the value of the UK pound has dropped from the Euro value. Now you will get around 10% less Euros for each pound that you convert. That means less beer per pound. Plus the prices in Greece have also risen so you will probably drop at least another ten percent - more bad news.

It is even worse for people like us who live in Crete, when we take our money out of the UK to buy a house or just live our lives we are looking at nearly 20% less than we calculated. That is a fifth, so it is a great deal. For example if you buy a house here for 20,000 Euros you just lost 4,000 Euros on the currency and price rise exchange.

There is a price for pound euro exchange on my website that is updated daily. I just pray that it stops, but it is unlikely due to the state of British business these days.
