I want to try to climb to the top of the big mountain with the bell on top? timos something? where do i start? i have looked at it every year but never got round to it! can someone direct me?

                                        Barny (stuck in welsh wales)

start from lefkoyia and turn right by Stelios's taverna (signposted shinaria)

start walking up the hill

the road forks just after the church and you take the left turn, past the old laundry (it has been tarted up a little)  keep going up!

you'll pass a church on your right and a barrel dog (he's quite a nice dog)

you will see a bulldozed road going off to left, you can take this road then almost immediately turn off it to the right and follow a rough path through the undergrowth

or a much simplier route, continue on the road you were originally on, until you see a sign for the Holy Cross (Timos Stavros)  this starts you off on a rough bulldozed series of hairpins ( the path mentioned previously meets this half way up)

continue up until road peters out and take footpath up

follow path..... (up)

you'll know when you get there

Must have been a Saturday too, of course . . .

As for keeping chickens in Crete, it's a whole new story:

Hello Barny,

I climbed Timeos Stavros in May by the second route Harribobs has described and although it is farther it is very easy to find. The first route he outlines is now quite indistinct and I didn't in fact see that path at either the top or the bottom of the mountain. When I last climbed here in 2006 this route was very obvious but not so now.

As the pictures show it is a lovely view from the top but at the current time of year it will be a very hot trip. If you want to try something level after your exertions try the aquaducts. They are quite a work of engineering. See

We'd agree that the 'rough path through the undergrowth' is not easy to follow. We went down that way once but we weren't really following a path (not knowingly, anyway!). The road way still leaves an interesting, roughish path to follow to the top and, I would say, more vantage points for interesting views. Plenty of water and a hat - you can't go wrong

I do hope you are not criticising Valerie's photographic composition skills?

Not all, just questioning your hide and seek skills.
The nonchalant sitting in chair in plain view gives it away despite trying to angle yourself behind trunk. May I suggest up tree or in dark doorway next time?
