it's quiet Carruthers.... too quiet
« Reply #345 on: August 09, 2007, 08:53:05 PM »
My translation is something like:

"The rebuilding of the Pagalianis fountain (or water tap)
is by the generous offering
of the birthplace (of me?) ??
Konstantinos G. Lioudakis
2001"

So I guess that it's not is Vrises but in somewhere called Pagalianis, wherever that is, and that it is on a fountain or public water tap.

George,

This may be cheating as I googled it, but is it here?

http://www.panoramio.com/photo/1764514

If so, it's near Meronas, about 10 km east of Spili. So Noopsy may not be wrong as there is a place called Vrises near there. I thought he meant Vrises near Georgoupoli.

It does indeed, Compage. Well spotted. Actually, it says 'ton Merona', which is the accusative case (used for the object of the sentence) of 'the Meronas' (The definite article is always used with proper names in Greek). That was the word that I couldn't translate. Because it's all in capitals, I didn't realise it was a place name.

There's no punctuation in the inscription, which doesn't help, but now I think it reads:

"The rebuilding of the Pagalianis fountain (or water tap)
is the generous offering
of my birthplace, Meronas.
Konstantinos G. Lioudakis.
2001"

I'm sure I know where the photo was taken and as I've not had a clue on any previous photos, I'll say 'Selia'. Of course, if I'm wrong, I really will be showing myself up! :
