Gavdos Island
« on: August 11, 2006, 01:54:17 PM »
HI ALL!
Anyone of you has ever tried the trip to Gavdos   ?
I've found that every Sunday ships are heading from Plakias (10am, back 4pm) to the southest european island, Gavdos:
about 40-50 inhabitants, beautiful vegetation, delicious food...
Did you try it?
If so, could you tell me how long the trip is?
I'm seriously interested in doing it, but don't want to do more than 2 hours boat travel...

Hi

I did this trip with Ploppy and Marge last year, great day out.  The boat journey was about 1.5 hours each way if my memory serves me correct.  But the views as you look back towards the south coast of crete are worth every minute.

If you go, don't be disappointed when you first get there as the harbour is very unattractive.  The local bus puts on a little excursion around the island for a few euros and then takes you to an excellent beach where you can eat, sleep, drink, swim, whatever takes your fancy (I think we did all four).

Then Lefteris takes you to take a look at the south coast, won't spoil any surprises but it's amazing.

Try and go it's a good day out but be prepared for disappointment, if Lefteris does not have enough people he can not go.

Ali

Alex
A boat leaves Chora Sfakion at 10.30 and arrives Gavdos at 11.45. The journey is on Thursday, Friday,  Saturday and Sunday until 31 August; Then Friday, Saturday, Sunday untill 20 Sept; Then only Saturday and Sunday.
The return journey back to Chora Sfakion leaves Gavdos at 17.00 each day. So there is a shorter journey time... the only trouble is it would take about and hour and a half to drive from Plakias to Chora SfaKion!!

On a different theme... I note where you live; I am planing a trip to Venice next spring as a surprise wedding anniversary for my wife. Could you recommend a few good eating places? Not the touristy ones or any that are expensive, just the places were Venetians go for a meal, perhaps run by local family members.
Thanks for any advise that you could pass on.

for Venice... well, I will send you a personal message, ok? Just let me find time to do it, because now I'm hardly working in my shop (with many tourists!  ). D'oh! I want TO BE a tourist!

Alex,

I would reccomend this trip.

As Ali said, we did this trip last year and enjoyed it.

The bay where we ate, drank, slept and swam was lovely. The water was so warm (noticebly warmer than Plakias). Probably because it is so shallow, I swam out a good 50-100M and it was still only up to my waist!

Part of the beauty of gavdos seems to be  the abscence of car driving tourists    and so I hope there is still no way to take one with you on the ferry. As I read there is now a bus serving some places on the island...

I understand that it is not possible to take a car to the island, the ferries from Plakias and Hora Skafion are both too small; for foot passengers only.

Yes, that's what I want!
Do you confirm the time to reach is about 1.5 hour (each time)?

In mid September we hope to spend a night on Gavdos before we head to Plakias.
Can anyone recommend accommodation and secondly, Graeme, where is Kamareles beach as I cant locate it on the (fairly) large scale map I have?
Is there much likelyhood at that time of year of getting stranded due to ferry cancellation?

I found also another site, with some info on Gadvos. Go to:
http://www.barefoot.info/crete/sthcrete.html

The last part, you'll find a Gadvos section, with description of some beaches.

Gavdos now no go
Decided our planned trip was too much at risk from getting stranded and missing flight home due to winds and ferry getting cancelled. Next year we'll visit Gavdos in the first week and not the second
So instead.......

6th, 7th, 8th Sept will be at Santorini , going over on the Seacat, tickets booked

Then back to Placky from 8th to the 12th

Any suggestions on where to stay on Santorini much appreciated, though this may just be one trip where it might be best to wait till arrival and sift through the room touts  :'(

Thanks Graeme for the info re Gavdos.
Santorini - suggest you try www.afroessa.gr/. We had very romantic break there en route to Crete last September.    Lovely rooms, pleasant owner, stunning views.

We stayed at Alonia Studios run by Nick Sakettas and his wife.
Good rooms and a good position in Thira (Santorini town).
Recommended.
