It should be noted that not all airports are going to implement the new baggage arrangements immediatly.
If you are travelling within the next day or so (as we are) it may be wise to stick to the clear plastic bag - just in case.

"Airport operator BAA said the new rules on hand luggage, which will allow passengers to take certain items on board, should have come into force at its airports at Stansted, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen from noon on Monday.

Southampton airport confirmed on Monday that it has implemented the changes. But BAA said the relaxed rules would not be implemented at Heathrow and Gatwick until Tuesday.

The company says it will need to brief its thousands of security staff, who will not be aware of the change because it was announced overnight. "

If you are travelling to any destination except the USA then you can take all items purchased in the departures lounge into the aircraft cabin. All passengers boarding flights to the USA are not permitted to take any liquid or gel items into the aircraft cabin. Our friends have just come back from Eygpt on the return flight on the plane that had to land in Italy.On arriving home they have found that 3 battery charges that had been put into suitcases have gone missing. One for game boy the other two for mobile phones.

They also said it was absolute carnage at Gatwick with a lot of other suitcases just lying all over the place broken and ripped.They had to wait one and half hours for the cases to be put onto carousels.Nobody seem very bothered about getting things sorted out.

Is there any sign at Hania airport of the kind of draconian restrictions on hand luggage that The Times (Sat Aug 19th) said Greek airports have now imposed? This was the same as the first few days in the UK after Aug 10 and was only tickets, keys, money, passports, etc in a clear plastic bag.

My friend has now been told by her insurance company who is Nat West that she cannot claim for the battery charges that had been put into the suitcase.

So be aware of what you are packing and what you are covered for if anything.!!

New hand luggage restrictions is new to me.  Been up to Xania today and no new rules.  Maybe they are just being slow to implement.  I guess the best thing is to be prepared and comply with suggested new regulations.

that was only UK airports for a short time

we are going to stick with the small hand luggage per the UK instructions ( but a couple of carrier bags of oil etc from the duty free!  )

Does anyone know if the Crete airports allow olive oil and honey (our annual topup)  to be taken through security. Obviously nothing like that through the UK airport security !!!. We always get given very local Plakias olive oil and refusing it could be problematic unless I know that I cannot take it through. The duty free stuff somehow doesn't have the same appeal. No complaints - I'm all for high security but it would be useful to know.
