That 'road' looks very narrow. What happens when you meet something coming the other way?

the only passing points are at the bends

*breath in*

Try this road at night- I did and it was quite the experience-

Fantastic pics John,
we "TRIED" to do it several years ago, got 2/3 of the way up when we saw in the distance a huge pick-up truck towing a broken down bus atempting to come round the bend towards us, bearing the fact that we were on the OUTSIDE edge and there was NO WAY I was going to move further over I decided to do a "12" point turn and get the hell out of there.
When we got down to Frangokastello we stoped at the big taverna by the fort  we got out with Zell soaking wet with sweat and totaly speechless, 1 of the waiters came over to us and asked if she was OK all she could do was to point to the mountain road, his reply was "oh dear", told us to sit down and fetched her the biggest glass of Mataxa I have ever seen, after anouther 2 she finaly calmed down enough for us to make our way back to Plakias, that in itself bad enough.
Needless to say we have neve been past Mirthios ever since

That is a great pity if you do hire a car. Obviously one does not need to try roads like the Killikrati pass and we did a lot of motoring this holiday on more conventional roads. To us the joy was in having very good roads (MUCH improved this year - election ??) with very little traffic. I suppose I'm used to driving in the Lakes and in Scotland (single track roads) with lots of traffic but I find the driving on Crete overall to be relaxing and very rewarding.

PS - we walk to Mirthios.

Are you sure that was the Killikrati pass you did several years ago - it was only blacktopped this year. Might you have been on the road up to Anapoli from Sfakia - a near equally bad road. That road is now being widened and our encounters with the roadworks this time were somewhat interesting. When finished it looks as if it will be a mountain motorway going to precisely nowhere - a very beautiful nowhere though.

Nothing seems to ruffle your feathers John - calm and collected are the words that come to mind.  Road to Anapolis seems a dream compared to the hell of Kallikratis Road.  As for passing on that road I do believe it to be near impossible and I was VERY grateful we never passed oncoming traffic in the Jeep.  I agree driving in the Lakes would probably prepare you for such a road to some extent,  I rarely drive in the Lakes because I dont like the narrowness of the roads - good job I have Chris or I would be permanently housebound!  I dont mind motorways though - when they are quiet

Me calm and collected !!. What about Sue and Graham. They calmly motored up the pass, enjoyed it so much that they immediately drove down it again.

I have to wonder if Sue and Graham had had a raki moment before the drive to perhaps calm the nerves - this is the only explanation I can offer for their cool exterior

Hi, G here of G&S. Not a raki moment (I do enjoy a glass or two, but never when I'm driving), but it maybe helps that I've been a motorsport/road car writer and chauffeur by profession for the last ten years (after 25 years in banking before that), so I'm more tha happy to drive anywhere anytime. From the silence of Death Valley in the US to the frantic driving in the centres of Paris and Athens we've happily enjoyed both extremes and everything inbetween over the years.

As for the Pass, the corners are the main passing points, but there are so many of them I'd hate it to put anyone off trying this spectacular route. Just do it in your own time at your own pace. We (well, me more than my other half Sue) fancied it as a hillclimb route against the clock!

I should have added to my post above that, after getting to know John & Gillian via Stella's over recent years, they're not only a very nice couple but also John is clearly a more than confident and competent driver on Crete and beyond.

(That'll cost you a drink next September, John!).
