Larapetra - not Irapetra
« on: June 20, 2006, 03:53:56 PM »
Just been chatting to a colleague who has returned from an all inclusive holiday in Crete.  Amazingly she does not know where she has been!     She thinks the complex was in a place called Larapetra.  She does not know whether this is in the north, south, east or west.  (It as an hour and a half from Heraklion airport)  I dont think she has been to Irapetra but I have never heard of this place called Larapetra.  Has anyone else heard of this place?  I confess to being absolutely intrigued as to where this place is.  Wherever it is she said she never went out of the complex!  What a tragedy when Crete is huge and has lots to offer.  Oh well, as my Christopher says "you can't have someone else's holiday for them!".

Let me know please if you can solve the puzzle although I suspect no-one I know has ever heard of this complex.

You may well be right.  Its the only thing that makes any sense.  Stupid I am so bothered about it but I cant believe she does not know the resort where she has been.

Sent you an email to yahoo on a totally different subject.

Mystery solved - it is Ierapetra.  Fancy not knowing where you have been though?

Hello Mandy,

Is this a private "Harrison" topic or can anyone join in?

I'm sure you are right, it is Ierapetra. Some people think the initial "I" is an "L" and call it Lerapetra. I heard a native pronounce it and it came out as Eer Rap Etra, with the emphasis on the "Rap".

It's on the south coast (east) and I visited in the 80's when staying at Ferma, just to the east. Nothing special I seem to remember.

By the way, on your extensive travels have you and Chris been to Makrigialos (also spelt Makriyalos) or Myrtos which are east and west of Ierapetra respectively. They both seem to be featured by Kosmar.

Hi Mike,

No its not a private topic!  You would think Chris and I never converse when we are at home in the evenings.  I suppose this forum does give us something to do when we are not working!

I think we did stop at Myrtos which is a nice little place.

Ierapetra is a dump from what I recall - well maybe that is a bit harsh but I remember it being quite industrial.  Not my idea of a holiday destination!
