Just checked Google Earth and resolution now much improved! In fact it is now good enough to check out the paths on some of Lance Chilton's walks "on the ground".

i've been messing around this morning  ( the cats away) i can't seem to get a full screen version of the Crete pics running but I should be able to photo merge several screenshots together to give an overall photographic map of the town.

we could then index it .....

B  Kostas-Chrysoulla
C Ali and Dave's shop
D Souvalaki House

i've been playing around and got a good tip from the sfakia site, make sure that the Terrain box is NOT ticked

also i've noticed that google earth really only focuses on the central part of the image

here's the paligremnos taken from 650 foot, centralised

and then off centre

Maybe someone with cartographical talents could use the satellite image to draw a map of the whole village with places that are of interest to us highlited thereon.

I hate to throw a wet blanket over the enthusiasm for a nice idea but...

Google or DigitalGlobe may well have something to say about using their copyrighted material.
After all, their copyright statements are clearly visible on some of the pictures above.

My advice would be to remove these pictures before someone snitches on us.

I must admit i'm not too sure about the legal aspect of it. The Google terms of use seem geared towards stopping people using it for commercial gain.

However its states: 'You may not copy, reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, translate, modify or make derivative works of the imagery, in whole or in part. You also may not rent, disclose, publish, sell, assign, lease, sublicense, market, or transfer the imagery or any part thereof or use it in any manner not expressly authorized by this agreement.'

So who knows? Anybody better at the small print? The Google terms of use can be found Here.

'good lord we're doing their advertising for them'

Totally agree Chris, I don't see any harm in asking them, as long as you tell them exactly what you intend doing with it.

If you don't ask you don't get (I've said that before somewhere!)

Might be a nice work to shorten some dark and cold winter-evenings... If no one worse than me would like to try I`ll do it oil on canvas.

Seriously: With the right collection of pictures from the "eye in the sky" I could make a trial with photoshop or Freehand... I own no explicit geographical graphic programmes... Any advices? But  as I said: not before the autumn-winter season...
Cpyrights should be respected, but I think it should be no problem to use their photos for a non-commercial projekt. They never asked me either if I give them permission to take pictures of me lying on the beach... Big Brother is watching you... I'm sure they have some better pics of us all  telling the book you hold in your hands...

btw.: anyone here with connections to the cretan art-scene? We [ a group of several Crete 'n' brushrubbish-maniacs] are very keen on an exhibition at the museum of contemparary arts in Rethymno... Wanna buy " Extravitamina" [Price: 800 Doughnuts...]?"
