samaria gorge

hello  we will be visiting plakias  16 may  for two weeks
            my husband has this idea that we will walk the gorge
           but im sure ive read on one of the sites that it may be
           closed because of heavy rain .
           we were told to bring walking boots  . but if it looks like
           it will not be open i dont really wont to bring boots.
                       any one heard anything .

"Giannis Fasoulakis from Chora Sfakion just informs me that, after he made 2 calls to Agia Roumeli to verify,

The Samaria gorge:

* will open from Agia Roumeli to Portes only (the "Iron Gates", the most narrow part) from after tomorrow, 6th of April

and

* will be open all the way from 15th of April 2006. "

well at least you saw the info, play around with the board, edit/modify your post, try again, don't be worried about not getting it right first time

the samaria can be busy though especialy around the 'gates' even in may, but it is very well worth a visit

what's the plan then? how do you intend to get there... staying in plakias?

one serieus word of advise, always take your walking boots with you.

Many more gorges / paths are worth a visit!

Totally agree with you. We board the plane and note the dress of all the other passengers  - obviously all heading for the beach etc (and why not). Walking boots are heavy to pack and so are the fleeces required for the higher altitutes and evenings (in Autumn) so we board the plane wearing fleeces and walking boots   and ignore the curious looks of many  passengers. We also book extra leg room seats near the door - which is an extreemly cold part of the plane - and our boots and fleeces become even more useful.

If you are lucky the security guys are asking to take of your shoes, let them check and look at their faces when take your sandals out and put them on.

thanks for your reply   we will be there 16th may staying at kosta chrysoula.  were not to fussy just need  a place  thats reasonably clean  and basic. we were there about ten years ago with ur daughter   so could not do the walking that we wanted to do  for us like many i suppose plakias is a very special place .  sandra and john

We love Imbros Gorge - a reasonably short drive from Plakias. We park at the bottom, walk leisurly up, have lunch at that super Taverna (real friendly folk there), saunter down again and then enjoy that fantastic late afternoon drive back to Plakias. All this being MUCH better than Samaria

and if you want a change...chora sphakion ( sfakia) is just around the corner for a nice lunch and a bit of history
