Is it worth putting my brand new, unworn Meltemi T-shirt on ebay or should I wait awhile??

George,
As you keep on repeating your above post:

How many t-shirts do you have, did you buy the whole lot?
Or do you need the money for the increased prices.........?
Leen.

PS
What is a beach activity centre?
I live close to a beach, but we donot have other activities then "taverna's" on the beach.

Probably hit the button more than once as you do!

I also want to know what a 'beach activity centre' is. I do hope as numerous other do that it's not floating bananas and jet skis

Does anyone know what's planned??

If you don't like what's going on there you should avoid everything branded with "alianthos" ! Hotels, car rent, and the train...
My bid for the shirt: 5£ [Unfortunately I sold our microbus with the old meltemi sticker last year... has anybody one in store?
Would you be so kind to post a photo of the meltemi in a little bit larger version???

alianthos sucks...

The full-size original of this picture is about 3 Mb. in its native format.
If your inbox can cope with it, it would be better if returner emailed it to you.

Alianthos are building a hotel on the Meltemi site.  The timbers from outside Meltemi are being used to build the small hut for the beach activities which has no connection to Alianthos.

You see- things look different when you look at them through the bottom of the glass- I do not understand the hysteria over a potential development, when Meltemi was just one step above a shack in terms of Architecture.

Personally, I would like Plakias to stay as quiet as possible. The Meltemi was great for us - completely quiet other than when we were safely tucked up in bed! (From other posts it sounds like it was fairly quiet even then). Any new development, if it is to be successful, will make the bay busier.

for me the meltemi was a place to meet up with my greek mates once they finished work - it wasn't some big flashy night club, not to busy or noisey and its safe...it just seemed to fit in with the scenery.  i guess it depends on what kind of conections and memories you have with the place - i'm still guttted - i've got alot of mates and even more memories....its the end of an era

One day, I hope we will make some local connections and have stronger ties with Plakias (we were saddened that Ariadne was closed last Sept.). For now, it is just a place for a 2 week, no stress break. Familiarity of surroundings and people is a part of Plakias's appeal so it won't be the same without the Meltemi even though we never went in there.

'Familiarity of surroundings and people is a part of Plakias's appeal so it won't be the same without the Meltemi even though we never went in there.'

I dropped in there a long time ago for a quick beer one afternoon, that was my only visit.
Even when I stayed at the 'Galini Beach', (now the Alianthos annexe on the corner), the only noise was a very quiet bass note, which helped me get off to kip.
It will be sad to see a landmark missing, but as has been said, time doesn't stand still and we must accept changes that the Locals want. We as 'visitors' (as opposed to tourists), do not really have the right to critisise their decisions, although we all have our opinions.
I personally wish the new venture good luck!

Manolis beach bar is a funky venue for the more relaxed evening sessions. For the more fit amongst us im sure the beach would offer itself up for an occassional dance. At the end of Meltemis existence I had given up as age caught up and Icouldnt get into the music, liked the old Meltemi 80s stuff better. Beach bar plays  great music, (remember Manolis used to be in Meltemi and also ran Hexagon  nightclub years ago.)  Shelter now also just in case the wind comes up.
Ref Meltemi it must have been one of the best dancing shack in the world. Should have taken home a piece of the bar, floor or wall to hold up to my ear like a sea shell when I get nostalgic. What memories. (if only walls could talk!)

We had the idea of a night in the meltemi in about 13 years when our children are old enough to join the party [or to stay at home  ] Long time ago it was a great place to meet up with friends, to shake our bones on the dancefloor and have a few drinks... And the best thing after this was to jump out of the clothes right into the sea for a night swimming under a full moon lightened sky.

As a visitor and tourist we might have to be just consumers. But due to our deep respect and interest for the cretan culture, the beauty of the land and the gratitude for being welcomed with a smile [especially in the awareness of the despicable crimes done during WWII by german occupants] it hurts to see what we do to the land. Probably nobody will die when an old rotten dancehall is replaced by a new hotel [I might have been crying the day they built the club and calling it a ruin for the lovely and quiet plakias...  ] It's still a difference between building a multibillion Project like the "Timbaki-Harbour" with deepest impacts to the whole area or if someone offers banana-riding on the plakias beach. But the causes are the same: we get what we want. Or better: we want what we're told  to want.
And the way to protect things from being wasted for short-distance profits of the few big players in the tourist-industry is to spread the welfare of tourism amongst the many small family-driven enterprises from the donut-man to the taverna in the smaller villages. And to tell them that you love it the way it is!
