real ale and greek sun just don't seem to go together, do they

oddly enough, IPA was originally brewed to be shipped out to the troops in India - hence the name India Pale Ale ...

Hodgon's secret recipe to ship ale to India.
Ao 1750 around 1500 barrels
Ao 1800 around 9000 barrels

Brits have always been a thirsty lot?

Hi,

I'm new to this forum.  Spent 7 days in Pefkos Rhodes in September.  I found Mythos really refreshing at lunchtime in the beach cafe, but I preferred Amstel in the evenings, not sure why, seemed a bit smoother.  I thought it was Belgian?

Funny how I enjoy lager in Greece, because I can't stand it in England, I'm a real ale man.  Must be the heat.
I like to think I have a reasonably discerning palate for real ale, and although I enjoy Greek beers in Greece I'm not sure I could distinguish Amstel, Mythos, or Alfa in a blind tasting. I suspect I'm not the only one in truth.

Amstel is Dutch although brewed for the Greek market in Athens.

On to retsina. In Lesvos, Retsina Malamatina in 0.5L. bottles is widely availably in tavernas and shops but I don't recall it being available in the southerly islands such as Crete. It is made in Thessaloniki, Greece's second city in the north of the country. I find some retsinas too bland for my palate, but not Malamatina.

Hi Harribobs,

Yes that's where Pefkos is.  I'm told that Plakias now is how Pefkos used to be a few years ago, before the stag and hen parties found it.  We enjoyed ourselves, but it was hard to find a bar that didn't have football on TV and 80's music blaring loud.  I wouldn't go in a bar like that in England, so why on holiday?

I'd like to meet a few Greek people who aren't trying to sell me something.  Is Plakias like that?

Doesn't sound like the Pefkos i knew!

Plakias has got a nice mix of bars and tavernas, there are some loud bars but it's never a 'stag and hen' type place ( and long may that continue) most nights i'm happy to stay in the taverna all night

As for them selling you something, no plakias isn't like that

We've been to Pefkos twice (6 and 4 years ago) and has a good time on both occasions. It was slightly busier than Plakias but small and friendly. We've recommended it to others thinking of going to Rhodes so I hope it hasn't been spoilt in the last few years.

Harribobs is right but I would go even further and say that it is quite rare for Greeks to be pushy in trying to do business. Exceptions would be the waterside tavernas in Rethymnon or Mykonos or a few shops in Rhodes Town. That's one of the many nice things about Greece, unlike Turkey or Tunisia.

Does anyone else find some of the retsinas bland or is it just me? I like a real "pine resin" bite to them. Need to be served well chilled, which they usually are.

We saw someone unconscious at one bar, and the hotel we stayed in sold alcohol to a very young person who had to be carried out by his friends.  One night we were kept awake by a stag party in the hotel bar.

I must emphasise that we still had a good time, but I think the rot is starting to set in.  Lindos and Lardos were not like that at all.

Don't get me wrong, I've had plenty of drunken nights myself, but didn't go to Pefkos for them, as I was told it was quiet.

(How to complain without sounding like a kill-joy?)

I didn't mean they were pushy, I meant I'd like to have a drink with a Greek person and a chat.  I didn't meet any in Pefkos who weren't waiters, barpeople or shopkeepers.  Interestingly, the two Greeks we did get into conversation with had returned from Melbourne and Inverness!  One was over gyros in Rhodes New Town, the other in a taxi from Lardos.  It was very strange talking to Greeks with Aussie and Scottish accents.  Both of them were very friendly.

I think the problem with Pefkos is that there's not much there except tourist development.  When you go to normal towns you start to meet local people.

I certainly did not mean to criticise Greek people, as I found (most of) them very friendly and helpful.

Wow..just had a look at that forum and the comments, and its a bit frightening. I wonder (and strongly suspect) that it's the Faliraki influence. Someone has seen another town which can make money the same way

Most of us on the forum like a drink but a drink in Plakias is more like having a laugh with friends

Thanks Harribobs,

That's what I wanted to hear.  We'll be booking up for our first visit to Plakias (and Crete) next year.

in the mean time feel free to ask any questions you want, the forum (unlike myself) is very knowledgable and friendly
