 Possible question for your next pub quiz " where is the most southerly Library in Europe?" Answere :- PLAKIAS. Located just past the youth hostal the Plakias library is thriving, with several thousand books not only in English but also German , French and a few Italian on all subjects, all catalogued in authors alphabetical and tital alphabetical. It started last year and has just grown, not just a place to get a book to read but  a general meeting place to catch up on all the gossip and to find out any information you may be after. Sit down   and have a coffee, a cup of tea or a glass of red or white wine. the library was formed by a "MOTLY" crew of ex-pats with their own very prestigious titles, theres Alan(1) office manager, Mike- estate manager, Andy-Janitor/cat nurse,Eddy : -Finantial wizard and   general tyrant and Alan(2) tea maker, all a great buch of guys who will always make everyone welcome.
Theres no charge for book hire or refreshments just a small donation in the box as you leave.
At the moment they are busy lanscaping   the area with a particular spot for English Lettuce,runner beans,tomatoes and the like (this was our donation when we got home and have now sent them on ready for sowing for the Autumn harvest.By the way way they do have a GUARD CAT (Samantha) which was a little rescued kitten found at the roadside and nused back to health by the guys at their own expence, but don't worry she's so spoilt living on salmon she spends most of the day up a tree in the shade asleep

Another pub quiz question: is Cyprus in Europe?  After all they joined the EU last year.  Much of Cyprus is definitely to the south of Plakias as you can verify in any good atlas.

I have read somewhere that islands usually belong to the continent that they are nearest to, so Cyprus is part of Asia.

This must also mean that the Dodecanese and the NE Aegean islands also belong to Asia.

Another question: is Crete further south than the southern tip of Spain? There is a place there that claims to be the most southerly point in Europe, but so does Gavdos.

I would say that Cyprus is in europe
 And what about the Canaries and Madeira. The Canairies have a rather strange status =for most purposes they are part of spain but they do not have they are a duty free zone . Not sure about madeira but i think they are an intergral part of portugal
 Crete is sometimes referre to as the southernmost part of mainland europe . That confuses me - clearly cyprus is not mainland , but if crete , as an island which is part of Greece , is mainland then why not canaries or madeira ?
 Sounds like a good topic of conversation for the Livicon - only 18 days to go

I would think that Cyprus should be regarded as part of Europe, especially now that the south part of the island is in the EU. The Cararies and Madiera are more Africa than Europe, afterall we don't class the Falklands as part of Europe just because it belongs to the UK.

Good to see everyone so productive on a Friday afternoon.

I would always have automatically included Cyprus as part of Europe, though maybe it depends whether you treat "Europe" as a political or geographical designation.  Anyway the upshot is that, sadly, Plakias library may not be the southernmost in Europe after all.  Anyone going on holiday to Limassol could maybe check this out...

Well it depends whether you include the Canary Islands as part of Spain ...

Southern Crete is definitely further south than mainland Spain, in fact even Malta is (though maybe not Gozo).

Whether it is the southernmost library in europe or not , I shall still look it up and am grateful to John and Zell for letting everyone know about this . But important things - you refer to tea and wine but what about beer ? ! And any tips on opening times ? Sounds like a possible diversion on the way back from the far end or damnoni to the Livicon

Good to see that all my friends have found an activity next to drinking (coffee) uhm...... But I am realy  impressed that the library has grown so big. I have some Dutch books here, so next time you are in Rethymno, stop by.......

Give us your address!     Maybe one of us geographers (?) travelling down by public transport with an hour or so to spare in between the coach from Heraklion and the one to Plakias, will drop by and take (some of) your books for you.
