I'm just back from a week in Plakias and a week in Sougia; I slept with the windows wide open, didn't resort to mosquito coils, Jungle Formula or anything and got maybe two or three bites in the whole time.  Not once did I get woken by that incredibly annoying buzzing in the ear.   I must admit I do normally eat a lot of Marmite, though didn't take any with me ...

I wonder if the beasties might be losing their natural habitats to climate change?  For instance the Rough Guide refers to a "stream" at the eastern end of Sougia which at least in July is just a dried-up bed.

you do cross over the riverbed at the eastern end of town, i wonder whether the rough guide is referring to the springs which are in the cove at the far end of sougia beach?

they are in the cove, there's one thats near the large rock around the centre, quite often the hippies living there will dig it out, the other is in the back of one of the small caves

But there has been a few comments about extraordinary winds, and in my experience the Meltemi is the best mosquito repellent you can get.

only 2 bites for me in 2 weeks, usually find that if you go to certain places at night your more likely to get bitten.  but not this year,it must be the wind because the locals are complaining the the wind hasn't stopped for over a month now.. it was just starting to die off when we left - i didn't blow away the flies though

Hi any one who gets bitten alot!

I always get bitten to death (except when it's windy) & I've tried every cream etc going. Last year I found one that works Boots Tropical extra strenght with deet. Tried & tested on 3 hols in Plakias, it smells a bit naf but I can put up with that as have had up to 30 bites in one go & they all react badly. Hope this helps some one..
