Like many Greek Tavernas one should not always judge by appearance -
Totally agree. This is a lesson I learnt some years ago. Some visually rather unappealing places often have excellent food and drink.

You cant go to Plakias without trying the chippy at least once!  I was the same thinking "a chippy in Plakias" but its very different inside with all the trees and bushes around you. The fish last year was still Nile Perch, very tasty with chips and some home made coleslaw very cheap ! (the flies were extra)
At least i can say i tried it!
My favourite is still Harakas with its cooking being done outside it really sets the meal off well.
Will be there in 24 days and counting!

You make the chippy sound so tempting   but I suspect we'll give it a miss for another year. Our favourite has been the Ariadne. Food may be not the best, but a good selection and quite cheap. Also, it's a great 'people watching' place, especially the staff - interesting to see the interaction between those that work their socks off and the one or two who take things a bit more 'laid back'

Do you, or anyone, have any recommendations for the best English breakfast in town?
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=3747\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]
We had breakfast at Gialos bar frequently. It's called 'English breakfast', but I'm not sure if it's authentic. However, we really enjoyed it.
Greek coffee (or tea)
1 egg
2 slices of cheese
1 slice of ham
bread
butter + marmalade
yoghurt + honey
fresh orange juice
... very good value for €4.50.

Enjoy!
Andy

Hallo again - it`s Cecile!

I refer to Graeme`s recommendation for Taverna Kastro  -  yes it is a great place.  I have had lunch there on several occasions and loved  the view - and the food.

You are right Graeme, for such a view one would have appeared to have climbed half a mountain, but it is a very easy walk and well worth the incline.

Lunch or dinner in Mirthios is not to be missed - have frequented both Plateia and Panorama and do not really have a favourite.   It is quite difficult to choose because Plateia now has a very `up market for Mirthios` facade, but the food and conviviality are exceptional.  It was only a few years ago that one sat in a very windy place at Plateia and the kitchen was across the road.   Very romantic and delightful with Frederiko and his charming waiter whose name escapes me crossing the road from the kitchen with the most delightful Cretan delicacies - this has not changed but one no longer needs layers of clothes because there is a roof!! and walls!!

This may not be the right place to discuss the train, but is it still running and is Marianna still doing her wonderful excursions?

Happy raki to all
Cecile

Panorama's a good place to have breakfast, to reward yourself for having trekked up the hill before the heat of the day sets in.  Fabulous views, only slightly spoiled by the rooms place just below. Can't actually remember what I had to eat.

Plateia doesn't seem to open that early.

We tried the chippy we will not be going again tho it has its regular supporters, each to there own. We would though like to hear how Ariadne is doing this year as we loved the place too but last year seemed   to be different please report back after your visit and let us know

As we are staying at the Apollon this year (Sept) we are bound to try Ariadne a few times and we will let you know what it's like.

Yes we will try it again after last years disappointment. Hopefully things have turned around and we can go back to enjoying one of our regular haunts.

When we ate there in May we were blatantly overcharged by 50%. This was no error! In fact the only error was mine- I was in such a good frame of mind as it was our first evening that I let him get away with it, which is quite unlike me.

So my advice is be careful.

Mike
