   Hi all, Just back after 15 wonderful days at Plakias,as we have had no sleep for many hours i am shortly off to bed,but we do have a lot to share with you all including a deadly snake in the middle of the road right outside Kyma,I will tell more tomorrow. regards Alex&Fran G.

A deadly snake in the middle of the road eh !!!!!!!!!!!    I would have thought that the male "far enders" should have the sense to put their shorts back on by the time thay reached Kyma !!!!!!

    when i was there, the snails were more in evidence than the snakes

Hi All, Sorry about the delay,I dont know what the snake was but Pavlos from Kyma went out with some other locals and held it down with what looked like a brush handle while another boy drove over it with a pick up truck,apparently these snakes are normally found up in the hills,and if you get bitten you only have a matter of minutes to get an antidote,Pavlos reckons it must have come in on the back of a truck with melons/fruit,anyway it was a mad 20 mins,but was the talk of the town for a couple of days. regards Alex G.

Sounds like a horrible over reaction to me. The most venemous native snake to Crete is a viper which is quite rare but found quite commonly in the UK (have seen many myself). One would obviously try to avoid being bitten by one but their bite is not particularly dangerous all things being equal. They are very shy and will only attack if cornered or acccidently stepped on. They are also beautiful creatures - great pity about destroying it.

There are other snakes native to Crete - some looking quite spectacular but they are totally harmless.
