What's the sealife like near the beaches? I got a camera that has an underwater enclosure that I thought I'd bring to take some pictures while wading around the beaches/rocks. Assuming there's anything interesting to see underwater near the beach. Is there?

Thanks.

Hallo Jeff,
it´s definitely worth to take it with you.   There´s not really much huge fish or dolphins around but the underwaterscenery is fantastic. Especially around the cliffs at the far end, at microamoudi, and shinaria. From microamoudi you can reach the next - even smaller beach- by diving through an underwater tunnel [aprox 10m long] that  leads through the rock. I took some nice submarine pictures there a few years ago. [From my avatar you may guess a little bit of the sceneries magic as it shows a painting I made in memory of the place... "Entering microamoudi" But never try alone cause if you fail in reaching the other side you will not be easily found...

In my memory it's more like a crack in the rock. I don't think that it's 10m long. No more than 3 I suppose. However, underwater it might seem longer...   (in this case the little chappy should be blue, not green)

You may be right with your reply...[things use to grow up in memories] maybe I added some feet "stream chill" to the distance, three inches extra for the half year I´m older than you are and a spoon for the pot. And for the colours: It´s nothing but "künstlerische Freiheit"...
To be serious: I think you have to go down for about 3m [may differ from the actual tide] then enter the hole, dive through for about 3m and going upwards on the other side.

Yours sincerely deepseediving Underwaterpainter

Hi

Shot a picture[attachment=106:attachment] through the hole once. Trying to ad it to this replay, dont't know if I do it right.

Picture is a bit off, as I just pointed the the camera without looking through the viewfinder  . It looks like a fairly circulare hole. I newer swam through, but are trying next time (with flippers).

Great photo - We've been to Micro Amoudi many times but didn't know about the tunnel/hole.   I can't wait to get a look at it later in the year.

Nice picture indeed.
I dived through several times without flippers without problems.
However, that was when the sea was calm. I wouldn't suggest doing this when the sea is rough, as there might be some currents then.

My reason to dive through was that you can easily climb the rock on the other side and then jump off the Micro Ammoudi side of the rock where the water is deep enough. Big fun (and no dangerous underwater rocks)

Hi, the tunnel sounds like a great experience that I would love to have a go at! Please can you give directions to it from the end of the plakias beach? many thanks

In Plakias there are 3 dive centers, it illustrates a little bit that the underwater world must be interesting. Not spectaculair, but interesting !!!! Why dont you make a try dive in the area with a dive school. Bring your camera and you will be astonished about the view underwater. 30 Meter is normal and it effects of course the results of your photos. here a website to so see some results in the photoalbum www.kalypsodivingcenter.com
