September Holiday 2004
« on: September 18, 2004, 05:16:02 PM »
I'm sure those of us that were in Plakias in the first half of September will have many happy memories of ...  The Wind!!  :'( (It was a bit blowy wasn't it). We had a great time - even better than last year as the breeze made walking more pleasant. I hope to post a couple of photos once I've sorted through them but just wanted to say how nice it was bumping into some familiar friendly faces during the holiday. We made some new friends as well   - difficult not to in a place like Plakias. Back in 2005? You bet!

Hi Graham,

Yes it was a little windy wasn't it, only really had 3 non-windy days. I can easily see how some-one in Plakias for the first time would think twice about going back again, we however know better

Yes, you can still sunbathe when it's windy.  Of course the wind has a cooling effect so you tend to spend more time in the sun rather than in the shade.  When it isn't windy the sand can get too hot to walk on around mid-day but the wind solves that problem.

At this time of year most people need a sweater or coat in the evening.

We were there in August and had 2 days of wind

One thing to be aware of is that the sand on the beach could strip a car in 2 minutes!!!! But if you run fast enough the sea is great

I bet it was windy in Plakias during the first part of September.

I went island-hopping round the Cyclades and got stuck on Mykonos. There were no ferries running during the high winds, so I missed my flight back from Athens. Because it was unknown when the ferries would be able to sail I booked a seat on a Belgian charter flight from Mykonos to Brussels and then came back on the train through the Channel Tunnel.

At the same time my parents were staying in an expensive Grecotel in Rethymnon. They reported a very rough sea with red flags flying.

Nice pictures, Graham and Karen. I particularly liked the sunsets, which I know from experience are difficult to take.

Thanks Fraoula - One more photo I meant to add is attached.

P.S. - Mike, Thanks for the comments on the sunset photos but I can't take much credit. This is my first year with a digital camera (Canon Powershot A80) but almost all photos were taken on the 'Auto' setting. Sunsets just had the flash disabled.

Hello Graham and Karen,

On the last of your photos (posted earlier today) it looks as if the umbrellas do not extend the full length of the beach at the far end (i.e. south east end). If you confirm this I will be very pleased as I always look for a beach without them. This would be doubly pleasing because it doesn't look as if they have progressed much in the last few years, which is in marked contrast to some of my other favourite resorts.

I have also found the large number of very positive comments on the tavernas in Plakias reassuring and the almost total lack of negative taverna reports. For me the quality of the beach and tavernas forms a very important part of a holiday (but not necessarily in that order).

Graham and Karen,

When I look at your photos with Internet Explorer they are about 4 times as big as the screen so I can't see them without scrolling all over. Is there any way of viewing them so that I can see the whole picture on the screen at once?

I got as far as the second one - Mikro Ammoudi. It looks good as there appears to be plenty of space to lie on the sand. It was far better when you had to lie on the sand as there were no umbrellas or sunbeds, and there was no road around it (and to get there you walked over the plank). In recent years when I have been I have seen it covered in green umbrellas with only the space behind them for those who don't want to pay for them.

Greecemad, If you upgrade your browser to Internet Explorer v6 you'll find it automatically re-sizes the pictures to fit into the window.  Go to Windows Update to do that.

The other option is to install a graphics manipulation program.  Using one of those you can zoom in or out at will.  There are many about.  Send me a Personal Message if you need more help.
