Kalypso Cretan Village

Just found this Forum and I have to say you guys really seem to share info. Can anyone tell me what the Kalypso Cretan Village is like? It'll be my first time in Plakias and I had to choose somewhere.

Thanks

Martyn

Hi Martyn and welcome.

It is always nice to have someone new join us and we will try to answer any questions you may have, so ask away. Having said that, I know nothing about where you are staying! Most of us either stay in or just outside the village and I don't know of any members that have stayed there but someone is bound to know something so give it a few days for a reply.

When are you going to Plakias? There are quite a few of us going in September and I am sure we will all share a beer or two as well as the meal we have planned which as last count was about 24.

Plakias is a lovely Cretan village, somewhere you can really chill out and just enjoy the local hospitality. The locals are very hospitable, the views are stunning, the food is wonderful and the beer very cold. What more could you ask for.

Susan

Hi Susan,

Thanks very much for the welcome , I'm so sorry I didn't find this site before.  I also considered staying in Plakias centre, but I found it difficult on the internet to find much information and there are no travel agents where I am. A lot of the existing net info appears to be 4/5 years old, so I decided to stay just outside in case it had got too touristy, which I dont like.

We are going to arrive in Plakias on 09.06.04, so not long now   I have actually been to Crete once before around the mid 80's, but made the mistake of staying in Agios Nicolaos. I did however on that trip manage to get down to the south-east coast, which in those days boasted miles and miles of empty golden beaches, so I am really looking forward to returning and hoping that it still has some of the "old" charm left.

Thanks for replying, I think you guys are doing a wonderful job in promoting Plakias and the info that this site contains for newbies to the area is incredible. I had actually found Ostraco's web-site some weeks ago, which really was the deciding factor in us choosing Plakias.

Take care

Martyn

ps Interesting that you come from Sutton Susan, as I actually contract to a company in St. Nicholas Road.... small world

Hi Martyn, no specific info on the Kalypso but from there you will have a very pleasant walk to Plakias, through an olive grove. The path will bring you out by the beach side of the Plakias Bay hotel at the far end of the town. Walking the other way to Damnoni, past the Hapimag resort you have a long beach with a naturist beach just beyond the end of the main beach.

Have not stayed at Kalypso but called in there once a few years ago when it was still a nudist resort.  I think that I am right in saying that the original buildings date back to WW II when there was a submarine base on the site!  What we saw was an attractive pool area set in quite extensive gardens with tennis courts etc and a small bay with its own landing stage.  No doubt it has been extensively modernised since our quick visit.  It is in a lovely setting but a bit out of town.  I know that they used to run a courtesy bus to and from the centre of Plakias.  As Graham says you do have a short cut through the olive groves but if you are walking back after dinner at night you will need a torch (and sensible footwear!).  Damnoni beach is closest to you and the 'clothes optional' bay beyond the main beach is a delight.

Have a great time and report back on your return.

Allan

I searched for the site a few days ago and found this: http://www.holidaycheck.de/hotel.php?hid=17267
Though it´s in "german" you might take some information about the "kalypso" from it. Don´t let you frighten cause paradise is just a mile away!
Bon Voyage!

What a lovely response from all of you!! we're beginning to feel like we are in paradise already......thanks very much to everyone. Almost wish we could cancel June 9th and go in September to meet some of you in person (almost lol). The walk through the olive groves to the main Plakias beach sounds great. Does it come out on theeast side of the beach?? and is this part of the beach still clothing optional?? As for Damnoni I've managed to read a bit about this delightful beach and it sounds like our idea of perfection, clothing optional and all.

I will write back into here when I get back to let you all know how we got on and our impressions.

Once again thanks very much to all of you

Yes Martyn - the walk to Plakias will bring you to the east end of the beach with the better sand and with clothing optional. Two things to look out for on the beach - the tamarisk trees - shade for free! Also, the doughnut seller who comes round in the afternoon - irresistable.

Have fun

Thanks Graham and Karen,

We will certainly enjoy it of that I'm sure, after all the anticipation we've been through lol. Can't wait to get on the eastern end and sample those donuts.

Cyas when we get back
