Road to Selia - newly blacktopped
« on: October 20, 2003, 09:04:31 PM »
The blacktop boys had nearly completed quite a wide road from Plakias to Selia in mid October 2003 - via the old track which goes via that concrete water tank. Not sure how they are going to complete it at the Plakias end as it is exceptionally steep at that end. However it is now quite a major highway except for that last bit.

You can see it on my photo together with that other new unfinished carbuncle building at :-

More photos (various subjects in Crete in October 2003) also at :-

Hi John R

There are some really nice photographs there.  I'm sure it would be a real tonic to look at them in the middle of winter to banish away the blues.

Great photos, John, carbuncle unfinished building not withstanding.  Got my Plakias 'fix' sure enough!

Excellent photos John - maybe I was just lucky with the internet connection but they displayed really quickly which makes a change (too stingy to get broadband)

I noticed this year when I went to Soudha beach that there is a road off to Selia about two thirds of the way to Soudha . Previously of ocurse the raod to Soudha had been a cul de sac with access only from Plakias. I dont know if that links up with the road you mention ?

We drove down that road from Selia to Plakias in September and it seemed ok as it was - steep but some way from being 'white knuckle' stuff. I suppose the improvements will be welcomed by the locals and others using the road when the weather isn't so good.

In reply to Roger - no the road to Selia that you mention (from near Souda) has been there for two or three (?) years now. This bit of new blacktopping / reshaping is on one of the original tracks from Plakias, the one which goes past the large circular concrete reservoir and it terminates at the far east end of selia Village (nearly out of the village).  They were blacktopping it during the first 2 weeks of October 2003 but when we left they had not done the last exceptionally steep 50 yards or so which "drops" into Plakias.
