Fresh Kalamari
« on: November 03, 2018, 10:46:20 AM »
I had fresh Kalamari this year for the first time ever and I could not believe how good it was compared to the standard frozen stuff you get in most tavernas. Does anyone know which tavernas serve fresh Kalamari in Plakias.

Thanks

I would imagine the Tasomanolis does.....but it's worth asking any of them as I agree....there's nothing quite like fresh kalamari and I have my doubts that frozen stocks are used much. I've had some lovely kalamari dishes at various tavernas in Plakias - especially the Gorgona. Enjoy !

I don't know for sure, but I'll bet that Gio Ma and Siroco do, as well as Tasomanolis.

I can't recommend Tasomanolis, however, as the standard of service, in my experience, has been appalling. I've sat down, waited, and walked back out a couple of times, not sure the staff even noticed my existence.

We have just returned from our usual October break in Plakias, and can confirm that The Sirocco does do Calamari, the whole squid, fresh, which I have never seen in Plakias before, only ever seen it in Lesvos in our June holidays. I think it must be seasonal, but not too sure. The whole thing, tossed in a flour mix, and lightly fried is gorgeous, and does as a starter for two of us, a little expensive at 10 - 12 euros, but worth it! I am sure other places advertised Calamari, I think one of them was the old kafenion down the side street, next to The Cosy Back Yard.
Missing Plakias already, roll on the release of Easyjet flights to Crete any time soon!

We paid 10 euros for ours and it was worth every penny.

I thought that this was possibly over-rating things a bit but I was wrong. My wife had it at Siroco and it was beautiful, the whole squid, as described above, and no greasy batter so you could actually taste the squid! I know what I'm having next time ...
