Fight at the Sunbed corral
« on: September 07, 2017, 09:19:27 AM »
Although we have been to Plakias many times, this is our first visit in September. We have noticed that at the far end of the beach (the nudist bit) the unsavioury practice of sunbed reserving has reared its ugly head. By 9.30 all the beds are either occupied or people have put towels on them. I am quite prepared to remove them, but my wife doesn't want the aggro. The guy taking the money doesn't care as long as he gets his 5 euros. Does anybody have any ideas how to nip this behaviour in the bud?

Seen it many times when at the far end of the beach. I think you have the only solution to the problem, take there towels off if no-one around. I am sure they leave them overnight. How inconsiderate of them.

Such a contrast from when I was there in August. I would get to the far end around ten thirty / eleven with loads of sunbeds available and most of the day too. You just need a windy day to blow their towels away, if you know what I mean?

Yeh, this all started on the 1st September, coincidentally when there was a massive improvement in the weather.

That comment strikes a chord with us.
Ruth and I are to try Paleochora next June.
We will be staying at the Aris for 10 days, just to see if it could be an alternative to Plakias.
But we are also going back to Plakias in early September and to Creta Mare.
The comparison will be most interesting !!

Daniel, We spent a week there this year before going to Plakias and liked it very much, hence our decision next year June 2nd to 23rd !!
We intend going to the island of Gavdos for a couple of days as the ferry leaves from there.
Sougia is also good and an easy 30 min drive away. Think you will enjoy it too !!

Paleochora appeals to much the same sort of people that like Plakias IMHO. Does anyone know if any tour operator goes there? It has the same disadvantage as Plakias in that it is a long way from the airport.

We stayed at Studios George. Although we went independently,  Sunvil do have four studios. I cannot praise them enough.

Yes. Sorry - I know this is a forum for Plakias but I too like Paleochora very much. As previously stated, it appeals to the same types as does Plakias. There are fewer British and more Scandinavians.  The beach is lovely - far end is the same as Plakias - and the town has much more character than Plakias. It's easy to get to by local bus from Chania as long as flight times coincide reasonably. Plenty of accommodation available on Booking.com.
I usually do both on the same trip - 10 to 14 days in each - and take the ferry from Paleochora to Chora Skafion and then taxi to Plakias. The ferry trip is spectacular.
However, having been to both several times my partner and I just cannot state that we prefer one over the other. But I think our main attraction to Plakias is Amoudaki beach so if you don't use Amoudaki I think you may prefer Paleochora.

This year we had one week in Plakias followed by one week in Paleochora. Next year, 2 weeks in Plakias. 'Nuff said.
