Happy? I should be.  Only six days until I jet off for my first visit to Plakias.  I hope you all understand the responsibility you hold for my excitement at going.  You've all talked it up so much I'm expecting a mixture of heaven itself with a dash of paradise and a gusty breeze pebble dashing my body with sand.

I' ve got my tickets, booked my parking at Gatwick and want to wish bon voyage to anyone else going on the 6am flight to Heraklio

You will NOT be disappointed. I'm on a countdown to my departure - 29 days and am as excited as you are. Hope that large group at Medousa on 5th September leave Babbis with enough food for our 2 weeks there.

I hope you will get as much out of Plakias as we do.  To us it is paradise, the only place we can truly relax.  Does anyone know about Ley (spelling?) Lines?  It was suggested to me that perhaps there are these lines in the hills behind which contribute to the peace and tranquility.  We have only 2 more days to go!!

I'm sure I'll have a great time. If the other visitors to Plakias are as laid back and friendly as the ones who post on the board I can't go far wrong. And you could be right about the ley lines.

I'll let you all know when I get back.

(5.5 days to go now and counting)

Hi reddiablo

In greek you are a kokkinos diavlos.  I am a Beckham admirer, but not necessarily for the sport!! (Thanks to the Mirror for the pictures this week) but good luck to Man U without him.

I'll try and pass your message on when I go in 3.5 days time, just thought I'd get that in.

I am also counting my early start on Tuesday as part of my holiday because I love shopping at the airport.

Further countdowns to come over the weekend.

From
A very sad (but excited)holiday maker to be.

Alisos,
have lunched at the Gallini Taverna every year we have been and its almost a tradion now.
The grub is superb, the pace is mellow, and every time we are there its at least 3 hours - quite marvellous.
There is another Taverna next to Gallini but have never been, so can't comment.
If you snorkel, the beach at Souda up by the rocks is superb and very safe. Its a bit cloudy sometimes close in, but once you get out a little the water is crystal clear.
Have a great trip, enjoy as am sure you will.
From a very jealous
Pritch

It sounds like a good place to forget my diet in.

We, hopefully, arrive in Plakias early afternoon.  My luggage has been reduced to a bare minimum so that I don't have to wait at reclaim.

After checking my airline out on a review page it would seem that the chances are I will be hungry so Gallini Taverna would be a good place to start.

Although I'm a very poor swimmer, (just can't get the hang of holding my breath) I do actually snorkel   so thanks for the tip.

Don't be jealous or you'll end up looking like this.

28.5 hours and counting(till I leave the house for the airport that is)

Has anyone heard of Astraeus airlines.  I looked up their website and I think basic  is the adjective I'm looking for.

No, they haven't heard of them either.  But good site. Completely devoted to airline food.

11 hours to go...

Goodmorning,

I need a break and have just booked my first visit to Plakias. I have never been to Greece before. I hope it will be so good as you all say it will be ... I am now counting down ... only 13 days to go.

Thanks for the good tips about the do and don't, like not renting a scooter ... I will try see if we can organize a rental car. Otherwise I am going cycling ;)

Did anyone ever make underwater photos there, and if yes how is it underwater? Nice? Full of life? I assume there is a nice blue clear water but how is the light here in general underwater? Is it also possible to hire some kajaks in Plakias or on the island? If so, which area's do you suggest visitting? Like beautiful nature (more or less undisturbed) area's?

I can't wait ;)

SeeYA,

Fili

I'm sure you'll have a great time beta.

Plenty of places to get car - and cycle - rental in town. When it comes to getting a bike, someone was telling me to shop around - and it's worth asking for a deal for an extended hire period, especially now as the season is coming to a close.

Friends who were out with me in June took loads of underwater pics with those disposable cameras - and had some excellent shots.

Enjoy!

Beta,
the water clarity is brilliant and I would love to comment on underwater picture ability, but the disposable 'underwater to 13mtrs' camera I bought at the airport, I couldn't get developed as the film was 'too wet to process....'. Yep mightily p....d off, especially as I took what I reckoned would have been some really good shots.
As to car hire, may I suggest you try - www.citycars.gr, we used them this year and they were excellent. You can collect/drop off from the Airport. From other people on this site, they have recommended Anso Travel in Plakias itself - go to there website, its on the Links pages here.

Enjoy your visit, but beware........it won't be your last.
