Beach art

I'm surprised that no one has commented on this yet.  Has anyone else noticed the stone 'structures' at the far end of the Far End?  I believe most, if not all, are the work of the chap who looks after the sun loungers.  I didn't take my DSLR with me to Plakias so haven't any pictures to post but surely other people must have taken some shots of them.  I thought they were most interesting and artistic.  What does everybody else think?

I noticed that whilst we had a fairly wobbly earth tremor whilst we were there, all the piles remained standing.

Mr Arnaki saw stones piled on fallen branches and on rocks when he was walking the Samaria Gorge.  Stacking stones in interesting places seems to be quite popular.

I assumed they were done by people on the beach - when you see one, it's so tempting to either create one or to try adding an extra stone to an existing one.

These things are absolutely everywhere you go nowadays and I must confess I fail to see the attraction. If you were climbing hills somewhere you used to be able to follow the mini cairns or painted rocks to reach your destination. If you go down the gorge to St Anthony's there are literally hundreds of them at the waterfall area. I fail to see the attraction myself, but perhaps that conclusion arrives with a certain age.

I have a feeling that this is something that picks up on age-old traditions......so it doesn't matter how old you are or where you are from. From memory there are similar piles in sites across the world....very mysterious .....so perhaps Plakias is just keeping the tradition alive. I think they are quite spiritual...but that's just me
