Inflation in Plakias

We estimate that from the prices we (half) remember from last year, and the extra amount we spent this year that things are generally about 15-20% more expensive than last year. Plakias prices which all regulars will know, have been quite low compared with the rest of Crete, and the majority of the less touristy Islands. We had been paying less for most things than we did approx. 10 - 12 years ago on Paros and Skopelos, but it looks like those days are over.
We haven't noticed this much difference in a year since the days of the Dracma.
Anyone been elsewhere in Greece this year and also to Plakias who could shed light on the difference in prices?

My experience of 28 years of holidaying in Greece is that generally prices have been more stable in the last 3-4 years than in any of the previous ones, as expressed in drachma or euros. In the early years the prices in drachmas went up alarmingly year by year but this was partly compensated for by the depreciation of the Greek currency.

The prices of my taverna meals and supermarket purchases have hardly changed in euros in 3-4 years, with the exception of those things affected by the tax rises (e.g. ouzo).

What has changed is that in 2007 we were getting 1.40€ to the £.

I still think Plakias is one of the cheapest resorts in Greece (and the nicest!).

I would be interested to hear what others think.

I agree.  I think we've been paying *roughly* the same for the last few years.

I remember when I first went to Plakias, All four of us ate out every morning for breakfast at the Crazy Dolphin every lunchtime at Antonis and every evening at Harakas, starter, mains and sweets and beers for two weeks. In those times I was on a lot lower wage than I am now. What changed?

Would agree that prices don't appear to have changed drastically although we did think last year was cheaper than the year before...or did it just seem that way ?

Hi first posting but a regular reader over the years and a regular visitor to Plakias mainly Costas. Just back from our other favourite island Lesbos and the resort of Skala Kalloni, first trip back for 4 years but it was definitely cheaper than then, evening meal at a taverna in the square consisting of 2 starters with free ouzo, 2 main courses, 1/2 kg of wine and a bottle of water averaged around 22 euros, even when my wife had fresh fish it only came to 30 euros. When we went along the coast to Parikila it was even cheaper. We hired bicycles regularly at 5 euros a day, or 3 days for 12 euros and they where always new bikes. Still we are looking forward to our return to Costas in September.

Can't really think where this increase has come from.  Certainly in the supermarkets basic supplies have not gone up 15-20% and on our experience of eating out this year we have not seen any major increases.

We normally travel to Greece twice a year, and used to go regularly to Symi and Crete. Last year there was a marked increase in prices in Symi, and sad to say the place felt over commercialised and expensive. Plakias in May and June this year was the same great value it has always been. I hope it's the same when we return in October.
