Just returned,
« on: May 07, 2013, 09:15:05 PM »
Just returned from seven days in Plakias, some general comments and observations. Nothing changes much, the usual musical chairs over the winterwith shops and premises, and waiters. Not many of the actual workers are greek, in spite of the high unemployment, ? minimum wage!
Eating out seems to be slightly more expensive, but still good value. The best two meals were Apnoea and Minoiko, neither of which are mainstream , but good value, very 'Greek' and very good. Am I the only one on the forum who eats at Apnoea?
Sun loungers at far-end, not many, but loads at Bay of pigs. Nudism, most greeks couldn't care less nowadays. Anyone disputing that should remember that until recently, the largest shop in town displayed hard core porn at knee level. Sad that the bakery is closed, but I am told its only for a refit.
I've just had a week, booked at short notice, which was devoid of problems, inexpensive and enjoyable....what more can anybody want?

Thank you for the update.  We are leaving in 2 weeks, staying in Myrthios, but heading down to Plakias for the beach, the shops, the cafés and the restaurants.  Really looking forward to it.  Where exactly are the two restaurants located that you are mentioning in your post?  Thanks.  Hugo

Apnoea is above the small beach just as you leave Plakias, and Minoiko is the last restaurant on the left hand side on the road down which turns from the front of the Souvlaki/Pita Gyros shop. Eat well!

We have eaten at Apnoea and I thought the food was very good and the wine and Raki excellent. The last time was sadly ruined not by the food but by the huge amount of smokers that insisted on lighting up and blowing the stuff across our table whilst we were eating. We do know if sitting outside this is normal. Unfortunately I have chronic asthma, so apart from the smoke spoiling the enjoyment it also triggered an asthma attack. The Smokers were not Greeks or Brits but Polish and Germans. I did ask politely  if they could wait until we finished our meal but they exercised their right to light up. Moved tables but it was just as bad. So excellent place if you enjoy a smoke and owners are very nice people.
Apnoea is just before "On the Rocks" bar on the road that leads to Souda Beach.
Minoiko is the best food we have eaten in Plakias. It is in Plakias on the road that passes the Youth hostel and goes up to Mirthios. Between Apollo apartments and the sea front but before the pharmacy.

Apnoea, or apnœa (Greek: ἄπνοια, from ἀ-, privative, πνέειν, to breathe), is a term for suspension of external breathing.

Sorry, just messing!!

Fancy a Mythos?

Hi,

Whilst a taverna called "breathless" up a hill is a lovely idea, I think the taverna is actually called "Apomenos" which translation software indicates means "confer" - so a place to discuss matters, presumably.  If anyone there or visiting soon can put us all straight on the correct name, that would be helpful!

I've always thought it looks like a very Greek place to eat, but we never seems to wander around the corner.  Perhaps next time....

I think I remember that it is called ΑΠΑΝΕΜΟ so in English characters Apanemo. sheltered from the wind or windless. I may be wrong as I am not good at Greek or colloquial translation. Having fun trying and Barny was funny. The Taverna is round the point and in a sheltered position from prevailing winds or the owner has a sense of humour . Arnaki may well be right as my memory is not good.

Update.
Found a video from IreneCrete on YouTube.

Yes, that's right, and it is notable for its scrumptious garlic bread which you can see in the video.  However the video is slightly dated in that you cannot get Mythos there any more - only Alfa.

Now I recollect discussing the name with Stelios...the proprietor, who confirms that  the name originated from its sheltered location, as does the small beach. I think it must be the only place in Plakias to be notable for its lack of winds!! The secret of the garlic bread, and much of the other cooking is the open wood grill...slightly smoked garlic bread!

Sorry for the red herring.  Muddled my letters.

Whilst the place itself might be sheltered, what has put us off is the strong wind to be battled through when going round the corner by the harbour. We are always  there during the meltemi, and I'm easily blown over - not waif-like but disabled. But knowing it is sheltered there makes a difference. Perhaps we'll try this August if not Force 8.

Hi, We visit Plakias every Sept and have spent many long, lazy hours as guests of Stellios and 'Mama' at the Aponema. OK it is slightly out of the main village (all of 400 m or so) but it is worth it. The food is lovely and the welcome is always warm and friendly. We just sit with a Mythos ...or Amstel.....or whatever...and watch the horizon over the bay...bliss...cant wait 'til Sept !

Agree re sense of humour and lovely spot, but be careful how much you order.

The LOVELY garlic bread is almost a meal in itself and helpings of everything else are massive, in my experience. I simply couldn't finish lunch (chicken souvlaki) earlier in the week.

Fantastic value for money, genuinely nice people and lovely food!
