Boat trips
« on: May 01, 2012, 02:29:29 PM »
Could anyone give me any recent information about boat trips from Plakias harbour? Places they go to, approximate cost and times would be good.

Not in Plakias but from Chora Sfakion you can do a nice tour by joining the crew of a small fishingboat. Catch some fish or penguins and get them grilled right on board.

To answer SunnyC's original question.... there are trips from the small harbour in Plakias several times a day every day when I've been in August.  These go out to nearby beaches, such as Rodakino and Preveli.  The ferry to Gavdos runs from the big harbour but you would need to stay for two to three nights in Gavdos.  All trips depend on the weather - the wind can mean that people are stranded for several days in Gavdos.

So far we haven't done any of the trips, but are thinking of going to Gavdos next time.  The ferry hardly ran last time we were there due to high winds.

There are also bus and walking trips available, including one to Balos which includes a boat trip.  These can be booked through any of the travel agents (as can Gavdos), or through the Olympic rep if you are on a package.

Someone mentioned the bakery in answer to one of your other threads, and I agree the big one is marvellous.  However - there is also one at the end of your street from Dora, which has nice bread and cakes and the Argo cafe also had good cakes to take away.  That will save you a bit of a walk.

Enjoy your holiday - you seem very keen to find out everything before you go, so you don't miss anything, and this is just the place to find out.

I wonder if Shinaria meant squid - because I've certainly never seen grilled penguin on the menu anywhere!

Thanks for the information, Anarki. Yes, I like to find out as much as I can before we go but also have a few adventures when we get there too. Does the bus go past Frangokastello and Chora Sfakion early June?

I'd be amazed if we saw penguins wild in Crete (haha), though I wouldn't want to eat one! Yeah, I think she meant squid or octopus or maybe sea urchins.

I might be wrong but I don't think buses run between Plakias and Sfakia any more ???

There is an iPhone app which will work on iPad called I-ktelon which you can look up bus times between main centres of  Crete including Plakias. I have not established whether the app is self contained on the device or whether it requires Internet access to seek the data

The buses don't do Sfakia to Plakias anymore but I think they go between Sfakia and Frangokastello. We now have to use Taxis and always try and book a Plakias based one. We have twice sat around in Sfakia for many hours waiting for a local taxi to turn up (continually being told it wont be long now). The reason being was that they were on Airport duty.
