I went to change some money at 2 exchange places only to be told "We don't change money since the Euro"!  So don't rely on Sterling - I used Euros and Euro travellers cheques.

I took Euros too.

Several of my friends took either travellers checks or sterling, and had no problem changing money - except sometimes they ran out!

Use the Agencies - Alianthos, Monza etc. etc.  rather than rely on a taverna or shop to change for you.

I think it should be said that Rob had trouble changing money in Rethimnon rather than in Plakias.  There was no problem changing cash at the travel agencies in Plakias as far as  could see.

It was Agia Pelagia (just down the road from Iraklion) but I thought it prudent to let people know that. Maybe I was just unlucky but I wouldn't want anyone to rely on their Sterling being changed. In fact I got a better rate at the hotel than I did back in the UK!  It would seem odd that agents in one part of Crete would change £ readily and another wouldn't!
