Will I find many changes ?
« on: April 16, 2010, 09:13:37 AM »
Hello again,

I don't suppose anybody will remember me, but I did join the forum about 3 years ago when my husband and I were planning a return to Plakias which we 'found' in 1992. Sadly it never happened as he died shorly after.

However I have taken the plunge to return on my own,  and yesterday  on the spur of the moment I booked online  !!

Now, I'm just wondering how much it will have changed     and wondered if anybody who went in 1992 will be able to tell me what to expect   ?

I'm going on 4th May to Kosta Chrysoula for 7 days ( we also stayed there in 1992) and I do realise how much that has changed, they were building the pool and more building when we were there ! the noise used to wake us up every morning

I think I got a good price, £187 with Olympic      Also does anybody know if 4th May is the first  flight ?

Jann

I think my first time was '92 Jan, and to be honest, there have been some changes. But don't worry Plakias is just the same as it's always been as far as the feeling and ambience are concerned.
A few new buildings and the complex at the far end is on going and a lot of tidying up.
Explore the messages, most of the changes have been reported and commented on.
Have a good one Jan and welcome back to paradise!!

Thanks for your reply George. I'm glad to hear Plakias hasn't been spoiled like so many places have    and it is still 'paradise' !  I've had a good look at the messages , and the map is fantastic it looks much the same from that.

Can't wait to get back although a bit apprehensive as it'll be my first holiday on my own

Hello Jann,

George is spot about about the atmosphere of the place not having changed- not that I go back to 1992; 1995 being my first visit. One thing that has changed IMHO is that it is nothing like as cheap relative to the UK as it was and with extra Greek taxes and the weak £ this year will be even more so. Still good value though.

The only blot on the horizon for me is the development near the "far end" and whether it will do for the far end what Hapimag did for Damnoni.

I hope you get there on May 4th- what a good price you found! Many of us are getting twitchy about the Icelandic volcano and those who are in contact with Paul (Ploppy) will know he is stuck in Stockholm, passing the time sampling the Guinness.

I wouldn't worry about being a single traveller as there are many in Plakias.

Mike

Hi Mike,

Thanks, I know it will be a lot more expensive now, it was still the drachma in 1992, but the main thing  is your reassurances that the atmosphere is as good as ever.

The development at the 'far end' will not affect me, I've never been that adventurous ! especially now that I'm older and fatter !

I know I took a risk in booking on the day of the Volcano, it was a spur of the moment thing, and I wasn't planning on a holiday at all,   just thought I'd do a bit of browsing, and when this came up it seemed mean to be. I'm getting a bit twitchy now as well . ( probably why he price was so good ) Still I could think of worse things than being stuck in Stockholm drinking guinness, I love the stuff.

Hi Jann,

Stockholm wasn't that great today, grey, windy and cold and I hear it has been beautiful back home

Hopefully a bit better tomorrow so I can get a bit of sun and do some siteseeing.

Strange thing about Guiness in the supermarkets is that it is 3.5% (usually 4.1 I think) as was every other beer on sale including Bishops Finger, Hobgoblin, Budweiser etc.
I bought a fews cans as my bank balance wont stretch to too many £6 pints in the town or hotel bars.

Starting to wonder if i'll ever get home, have flight booked for Monday but I seriously doubt it'll happen.

Might have to look at using the Train though 24 hours of sitting on 6 different trains doesn't exactly fill me with joy.

Hi, it has indeed been lovely all week here (Lancashire coast) hope it improves for you tomorrow.

£6 a pint !!    I'd stick to the cans then

I;ve just had a text from a friend who is stranded in Rome, she's no idea when she'll be able to fly and the hotel she's had to find is 115 Euros a night !  Funnily enough she texted from an Irish Bar she'd found  (didn't say what she was drinking)

The train journey sounds a bit of a nightmare, hope you don't have to resort to that !

Am really getting worried about my flight now

Am really getting worried about my flight now

Jann,

I agree with you.
Our flights are booked for the 2nd of May. Accomodation and taxi transfer are arranged
and now, we are not sure what happens during the next two weeks.
All airports in Germany were closed with no end in sight. We should not give up the hope.

No longer in Stockholm, I did the train marathon yesterday and today.

Up at 5am yesterday and got in to Cologne at 1am. Trains were fine despite 2 worrying 8 minute connnections in Hamburg and Hannover. Got to love those German ICE trains, the way it should be done.

Strange that I have been through 4 countries and not shown my passport even once.

Arrived in Brussels about an hour ago, just to find that I had booked the wrong dates for the hotel

They are fully booked but the guy on reception said a friend of his is staying in the hotel tonight and I could have his room and he´d put him up at home. What a star

Eurostar booked for Thursday unless anything comes up before.

A friend of mine was stuck in Rome for 3 days. She managed to get on a coach to London at 4am yesterday. There was an accident in Milan so they had a 3 hour delay. They still haven't reached the port   Hope she manages to cross channel today

good luck with the rest of the journey Paul

Just heard on news about some people exiting Crete. They caught the ferry to Venice and then two hire cars to Calais. Probably better than the usual scrum at Heraklion airport !!!

I have a friend of mine, she's got a 4 bed villa on the beach in Turkey and should have come home on Sunday.
She's a doctor and has made all the arrangements for cover while she's away etc., and has spent her days calling the airport 2 or 3 times a day while she sprawls naked by the pool.
You can guess what I called her!!

All these people have my sympathy, I had a rough taster of what they're going through when XL went down regarding lack of information but nothing on the scale of these guys!!
