Taxi share in August 2010?
« on: November 17, 2009, 11:22:23 PM »
We have booked our perennial Crete flight this year from Manchester on August 17th 2010, so we land at Heraklion in the evening.

Our return flight to Manchester is the night of August 31st 2010.

We normally book a return taxi ride from the airport to Plakias.

If by some stroke of luck there is anybody that would like to share the costs of the taxi with us as a couple, either there and or back, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Hi Guys,

I've thought about this in the past but never tried it. My one concern is that a normal taxi simply wouldn't be large enough for 4 people and all their luggage.

I might start looking into the airport transfer options that you can seem to book these days. Trouble is with Plakias you may end up with a really long trip like some of the nightmare package transfers we have been on or hear about.

Has anyone tried this alternative yet?

Hi

We have done a taxi journey with 4 people & luggage & it was tight but fine, they will always get the luggage in somehow. I also have done the Easy jet transfer on the return leg, it was cheap £24 & a taxi to myself so fantastic, however I have not been able to find anywhere near such a good deal since.

If you're going to hire a car for the majority of your stay, pick it up at the airport and leave it at the airport on your return. Lots of us do that and if you take off the cost of 2 return taxi fares, as opposed to the small extra car hire costs, it's worthwhile.
Plus there's no waiting around for the buses and you can be in Plakias within one and a half hours, get yourself sorted and get out and get the first Mythos or three in before the tour buses turn up, sometimes even leave the airport! It's been known!!

Hi Steve & Dawn

We hired a group A car last year from Heraklion for the 2 weeks and it cost us 330 euros.
Two taxi fares at approx 90 euros each, and its easy to see why so many of us prefer the car option.
We were in the apartment, unpacked, been shopping and were sitting in the Livicon enjoying a beer as the coach arrived.

Although we arrive and depart on your days, we land at Heraklion early afternoon, and therefore our return flight will be mid afternoon. (Gatwick flights), so we are unable to be of assistance.

We are in the Irida, but most nights (no, every night) we will be in the Livicon, feel free to come and say hello.

Hi Peter and Dawn,

Thanks for the offer, we will pop in to say hello.

For the last few years we have travelled to Plakias late July/early August, but this year with flight prices shooting up we decided to go two weeks later in order to get a flight at a reasonable cost. Maybe we will see more Brits around this time as we go towards September. Last year there were hardly any UK nationals (apart from the crowd that went to Jo's bar who seemed to be staying at the youth hostel).

I'm sure you will. Freddy once told me that September is English month.

I think there was a recent posting about the taxi fare being over €100 each way next year. Ouch!

A year or so ago there was some discussion about a 3-leg bus transfer (bus to Heraklion town, second bus to Rethymnon, and a third to Plakias). If anyone believes the Olympic transfer isn't good (and to be honest it is at best OK but often protracted) then the bus option with full luggage sounds horrendous.

I'm sure George is right re. car hire, if you hire for the 2 full weeks. Sounds like the first Mythos takes priority over the unpacking George!!

The unpacking was included in my calculations Mike, once all that is sorted and the shopping I might add, I'm on holiday!! So a Mythos or three will be savoured without the thought of any more unnecessary chores.

I'm with you spottt, I always think to myself that a nice slow stroll down to the far end in the morning will give me a bit of exercise. But if there's a car sitting outside the apartment it does seem such a waste doesn't it?

We have just paid 184 euro's for 2 weeks car hire with a company called 'The Best cars' this was an out of season price as it was for the first 2 weeks in November but I think their prices are vey good anyway. That price was for full insurance no excess & 2 drivers. The car was good as was the service at Heraklion. So if your thinking of booking a car do look at their website www.thebestcars.gr .

Hi Rewena

That is very good information......as regulars to Plakias we are always looking for a better car hire deal.
Have just checked their website for end August next year and for 28days hire we could save more than £300 compared to our normal deal with Euro Cars...........well done & thanks.

If we every happen to meet in Plakias we will owe you a Beer!!

Happy Winter

That's excellent. We've always been happy with JustRentals but sounds like 'thebestcars' are cheaper. Will check them out next time we go (sadly, not 2010).
