I am thinking of going to Plakias for a quiet week of sea and sun (my husband can't get the time off work and I need a break!).  I have been to various places in Greece with my husband, is Plakias the sort of plcae I could go alone?  happy to sit on the beach all day, but will I be OK in the tavernas on my own?  Any advice welcomed - thank you

Hi Ruth,
I'm sure you'd have no problems. When we've been, we see quite a few lone travellers. Probably some of the forum members who travel alone can provide more info and assurance.

I tend to agree with the previous reply. I just don't see any problem. Certainly no problem in the Tavernas and in the bars - especially such as Livicon.

Welcome!
I've been to Plakias on my own several times now, and personally don't know of a safer place to be for either a man or a woman!
Over the years, I have seen and met several woman who have been on their own, and they have always told me that they have been very well looked after by everyone they've met.
You don't need to sit on the beach all day either, the surrounding area of Plakias is beautiful and it would be a shame if you didn't explore it fully either by walking or hiring a vehicle.
All the residents, bar/taverna/shop owners I know are lovely people, warm and friendly, and will I am sure make you more than welcome.

In short, relax you'll be in good hands!

Any advice on where to stay?  I have 2 options:  Dora or Kostas Chrynallous.  As I'll be on my own I thought a place with a pool may be better, but it does seem to get reviews suggesting that it's quite noisy (and I like a good night's sleep).  Any thoughts?  Thanks, Ruth

Sounds like you're looking at the Olympic offering Ruth.
I've stayed at Dora a few times and it's fine and you can use the pool at Kostas. Never stayed at Kostas, but several other members have!
Check out the 'article system' at the top of the page, for some other comments on both these places. Neither are too far away from the 'action', maybe two minutes max.

If you decide to go independantly, get back and we'll storm you with contact numbers and addresses for other places.

Hello Ruth,

I fully concur with George's opinions about the suitability of Plakias for a single traveller. I have done it several times. Over the 20+ years I have known Greece there has always been a significant number of male single travellers but in recent years the number of women singles has markedly increased. You probably know that Plakias has a clothes optional beach. Many single women don't have a problem sunbathing naked nowadays and I have never seen any attracting unwanted attention. It's not compulsory though!

I have stayed at Kostas Chrysoulla twice and have booked Dora for 2009. KC is much, much larger and could be more anonymous if that is what you wanted. Round the pool it could be pretty sociable as well. As has been said, if you go to Dora you have use of the KC pool. Standards at KC are a bit variable and a bit more attention to detail there wouldn't go amiss, but basically it is OK. However, apartments No. 56 and 62 have diabolical balcony views and should be avoided if you have that option.

As for tavernas, no problem! If you are in Plakias from mid Sept to mid Oct the place will be pretty busy (don't ask me why this time is so popular though).  

Olympic is now the only mainstream UK tour operator going to Plakias so their holidays get booked up early, so best of luck.

Dora's definitely OK - we stay there a lot. Basic, but very handy for everything.

I think both are much of a much basic but handy. KC does havr the advantages of the ( quiet, especially in the morning ) pool and bar, Angelo is very good for a nightcap. It is also just a little bit handier for village ( about 3 minutes handier).
If you can get yourself to the village wiyhout using Olympic you will have no problem with accommodation.
