SMOKING BAN
« on: June 10, 2008, 01:37:25 PM »
Being one of the "unclean" I keep hearing various reports about there being a no smoking ban in Greece,
has anyone any definate ideas?
If not, anyone who has recently come back know if it's still permited to smoke in the area in front of the servery in the departure lounge?

I hope it stays away from Plakias, I like a smoke with a pint but can't do it over here now (mind you I was on 20 pints a day) It wont be the same relaxing in Kyma at the end of a hard day! 51 days to go.

Hi John and Zell,

we are both smokers.

On the last Sunday we could smoke on a special place in front of the check-in at the Heraklion-Airport but smoking in the departure lounge (after the security check) was not allowed.

Sorry, we have no better news concerning this question.

I can confirm it wasn't allowed in the airside lounge in May. However, it was allowed (at least it was happening) upstairs in the corridor leading to the misnamed Duty Free shop and you could cut the atmosphere there with a knife. Most unpleasant.

As for Plakias, no change I think. Smoking is still allowed in the tavernas irrespective of how enclosed they are (in the UK the ban applies in enclosed and semi enclosed areas, the latter including bus shelters). From my perspective the UK ban is just the sign of a more civilised society.

In my experience the chances finding a Greek man who doesn't smoke are similar to finding rocking-horse droppings.
