Plakias to Heraklion via Rethymnon by bus
« on: May 04, 2008, 11:29:49 AM »
Hello

I'm going to Plakias for one week at the end of this month. My return flight, from Heraklion airport, is on Saturday May 24th. Take-off is at 13:45 so I think I must get there at the very last by 12:45 for check-in.
If I remember correctly, on Saturdays the first bus to Rethymnon leaves Plakias at 09:30 which let me with 3 hrs and 15 mn max to do Plakias-Rethymnon + the connection in Rethymnon + 2nd bus Rethymnon-Heraklion + taxi from the bus station to the airport.

Do you think I can make it?

Thank you in advance!

Norbert

Hello Askar, and welcome to the forum.

You should be able to make it for your flight if you take the 0930 bus from Plakias.  It should get you to Rethymnon by about 1030 giving you time to buy a ticket and catch the 1045 bus to Heraklion.  This should arrive at around 1215, and if you take a taxi from the bus station to the airport you will have ample time to check-in.  The desks for your flight should be open from around 1145, and you will have until 1300 to complete the process if you are flying directly to the U.K. or 1315 if you are catching a flight to Athens.

Good luck!

Askar - I've not used the bus so it's difficult to comment but I don't think I'd be able to relax, relying on 2 buses and a taxi and then arriving less than 2 hours before the flight's due to leave. As Harribobs has mentioned in another post, check-in and security can be chaotic at Heraklion. I will echo Noopsy500's wishes though -
Good Luck!!!

Thank you for your responses.
Well, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I would have prefered to take the bus - I read somewhere that a taxi to Heraklion costs around 80 € which is a little bit steep for me. On the other hand I'd like to avoid the stress of missing my flight.
A middle option would be to do Plakias-Rethymnon by taxi (leaving Plakias earlier than the bus) and then do the second leg, Rethymnon-Heraklion by bus.
Do you know by any chance the price of a taxi from Plakias to Rethymnon ?

Thanks again to both of you.

Norbert

The busses are reasonably reliable. You could take the bus to Rhethymnon and if you are late in Rhethymnon you would have time to take a cab to Heraklion there. From Heraklion to the airport it is always smart to take a taxi.

Nobody seems to have suggested what I would have thought was the obvious solution.  Take the bus from Plakias to Rethymnon the previous afternoon and spend the last night of the holiday there.  It's an interesting town anyway, has a wide choice of eating places and accommodation costs from 10 Euro a night (hostel dormitory) upwards.  That way you can catch a much earlier bus to the airport.

Rethymno - Heraklion:

06.30, 07.30*, 07.45, 08.45, 09.45, 10.45, 11.45, 12.45, 13.45, 14.00*, 14.45, 15.45, 16.45, 17.45, 18.45, 19.45, 21.15, 22.15

*Via the Old National Road

Missing the flight could prove very expensive indeed and surely can't be worth the risk.

#6 and #8: thanks for the links.
#7: I'm thinking of this option too.

Again, thank you everyone for your help!

Another way still is to take the bus the previous day from Plakias to Rethymno and another on to Heraklion.  Overnight there, and take a taxi to the airport the following day.  I did it this way in my early, less confident days.  I stayed at the Galaxy on Demokratia Avenue but I'm sure other members will be able to point you in the direction of other, cheaper accomodation.

As they say, there are many ways of skinning a cat!
