Easyjet to Crete!
« on: October 25, 2007, 09:35:07 AM »
it has been announced today that Easyjet are to buy GB airways for £100m+. They will be keeping bases at Gatwick and adding Manchester. Does this mean cheaper fares, although GB/BA were good value

Sorry - I didn't see your thread as I put up similar news elswhere on this forum. It would be nice to think Easyjet will fly to Crete as a result of this takeover (Winter as well ??). There is a chance they may not fly there at all ??? I would have preferred BA - they were very cheap and it means that I now can't spend a pile of airmiles that I was planning on in 2009 !!!!!!!!!!!

You can still buy BA / GB airlines flights on the BA website for flights in September 2008  - just tried a dummy run!! - perhaps not advisable right now though ??

Just found this on Google search :-

"We have bought GB because it will allow us to expand, particularly out of Gatwick. As far as Manchester is concerned, at this point we just don't know. We've not made a decision."

it appears that Easyjet have a problem with flying  anywhere out of Manchester. In their contract with Liverpool airport they are barred from flying from another north West airport, no doubt nothing that money cannot solve

We fly from Manchester to Chania with Monarch or GB Airways to Heraklion when we visit Plakias. GB airways has always been a much better service (esp the ability to check-in on line 24 hours before flying to nab the seats with more legroom). It looks like our choice will be more limited now unless EasyJet decide that its worth flying Liverpool to Crete.

Let's hope EasyJet expand to meet everyone's needs now that they have acquired GB Airways.

Hopefully the fares might be a bit cheaper, so it might be worth holding back for a while.

That's a better alternative to Jet2 from Yeadon! (Especially considering the depart/arrive times - I didn't fancy getting from the middle of nowhere back to Manchester at 3 a.m.)

With Leeds Bradford International (formerly known as Yeadon in years gone by) being our local airport, just 15 mins away, I could take exception to it being referred to above as 'the middle of nowhere'. Rest assured it isn't and I won't.

It's an excellent, ever expanding regional airport, mainly as a result of the superb Jet2's operations, and is only approx 75 mins from Manchester by car. A far nicer experience to pass through than the latter. Sue and I are already looking forward to returning to Stella's yet again next September on flights costing a mere £90 each all-in return.

NB Back in my days in banking we used to refer to doing missionary work when posted over to the western side of the Pennines! (Only joking).

   P S ! (Or maybe not   )

LBI is just the teensiest bit out of the way from Manchester .... and probably even worse at 3 a.m.

On the positive side, it isn't Liverpool John Lennon

P.S.  Missionary work, from Silver Street Head?

There is an easyjet advert in this morning's Guardian advertising flights from Gatwick to Crete (amongst other places like Mykonos and Corfu). There is no mention of which Crete airport and there is nothing about this on their website yet.

Gatwick is no use to us in the North, though.

Well according to the Easyjet website, they are flying to Heraklion from Manchester, though there are currently no details of the flights.

I am going to see what there is from Gatwick, and if cheaper, cancel my GB Airways flight.

I have received an advert email from easyjet stating that bookings to Crete from Manchester and Gatwick commence tomorrow - 01 Jan 2008. Cut/paste from that advert :-

easyJet are now pleased to announce even more new routes for your summer holiday. From 1 January 2008 flights are on sale to the following new destinations from London Gatwick and Manchester:

Fly from Manchester to:
Crete (Heraklion) from £44.99

Fly from London Gatwick to:
Crete (Heraklion) from £37.99

Just noticed on their website that there are no flights after 30 September - unless that is the date up to which one may book at the initial stage - doesn't look good for us October regulars ???

Happy New Year to everybody
