Went to Paleochra in August last year we were not impressed, mind you it was  a greek holiday I was hours looking for a place to stay and eventually got one which you can imagine, I suppose I should try again in June this year.   Alex

I'm surprised anyone who likes Plakias doesn't like Paleohora. It has the same friendly feel to it and, arguably, at least as good a beach and selection of eating places. Being on the ferry route along the south coast is a plus.

Possibly it was because I was there at the busiest time of year as I said I struggled to get accomadation, Had to wait ages to get a table and a meal, I suppose I didnt give it a chance
the accomadation I finally got was terrible not the cleanest place and no air con in the middle of August, I stayed just 2 days and got the ferry back and returned to Plakias.  Alex

I'm with you Alex, although we only stayed overnight, had a reasonably pleasant evening there and drove back the following day.
The accomadation we had was awful as well, maybe we should have given it a chance also.

Probably the fact that I had a flat tyre and had to get it fixed and got absolutely drowned in a torrential downpour in the mountains getting back to Choras Fakia didn't help either.

which is what we're doing this year as well

Paleohora is somewhat bigger than Plak (IMHO) and the accommodation more mixed, we stayed the odd night in a slightly iffy room a few years ago but we taking no chances this time and have booked into some studios we have used before, almost in the centre of town and perfectly clean and modern.

we've got a few things penciled in already, including walks to sougia, elefonissi and selino in general

can't wait!

It would be nice if we could finally meet up in one place or t'other (or both!).

This will be my first trip to Paleochora so I'm somewhat nervous, not knowing where to stay etc.  Greecemad has recommended the "Anonymous Homestay".  Anyone else got any knowledge of other decent accomodation and also places to avoid?

Incidentally, Paleochora was recently featured in Virgin's top ten naturist beaches, along with Elafonisi.

Lovely place Noops and a great base for visiting both west and east of the town

ellefonissi is marvelous but you MUST NOT stop at the first beach, cross over the water and go up the headland, the father you go, the better it gets

we are going out on the 27th May for 2 weeks btw, staying at the george studios, i have also heard the Haris apartments are good as well

We only visited Paleochora for 1 day and thought it was too busy for our liking. I imagine the improvements to the road from Chania have been finished now so it may attract more visiters this year.
The beaches were good, though and there was a greater variety of shops than in Plakias (IMHO).

I have heard that Elafonisi is lovely - certainly looks it in your photograph - somewhat reminiscent of the Caribbean. Who knows, I might get the urge to mosey on down and take a look for myself, if I can work how to get there...

Noopsy,

If you're staying in Paleochora, you can get a boat trip to Elafonissi.
