ONE: The Train.
Is it back in service (or likely to be)?

If not, what options are there for local transport?

I ask this because I have some "walking difficulties" - that avatar is an exaggeration but I need an elbow crutch to substitute for my duff leg.  Provided the road is reasonably flat I reckon I could manage to get to Souda beach but hills are a real problem for me.  So, heading over to the Amoudia's on foot, is probably out.

TWO: The bus(es).
At this time, the KTEL website is still showing off-season timetables.  Does anybody know what/when/if the summer timetable and/or services will be?

Exploring by local bus is great, chance to see things from higher up (than a car) and mix with the locals at the same time.

THREE: Kosmar rep.

If so, do the Aretousa Studios have kettles?  I need a litre of caffeine to start my day ... only after that can I think of going in search of the ultimate kaffe Ellenikos, skieto.

The road has a bit of an uphill out of Plakias and then there is a sharp up and downer about two thirds the way there. I'm able bodied , but it gets my legs complaining. A taxi was €5 each way last year - tell the driver what time you want to come back. They are prompt by Greek standards. not normally more than 10 minutes late.

I too would like to know about the train. Will it ever be back? It was great for day trips to the Monastry and the gorge, especially the long lunches (can you call 8 Mythos a lunch?) at the village tavernas.

I don't think the train will be back on last we heard it had gone to Athens never to return to Plakias.

The walk to Souda has a few 'slopes' but nothing too strenuous, I do it most years, it's a very pleasant stroll.

No, its for Souda. All due acknowledgement to George, but there is one quite steep up and down hill on the route. As I say, it gets my legs complaining a bit. It is no problem for the fully fit, but may prove more challenging to you, though only you know your own capabilities, and I see you are going in July, when it may be a tad warm.

Compared with the route to Amoudi, however, it is a stroll!

I may just give the Souda-stroll a try .... the best test is to do it ... if I fail, at least I'll know I can do the walk back.  Walking in the midday sun is not a worry (as long as I have my bush hat and the thought of a long, cold drink at the end of it).

Yes, we leave on the 5th Her to BHX 23.30 so we may meet you especially if you sample the beer in the Livicon! We stay there & always have one for the staircase...
