Children in Plakias

We, a familly with three children, are planning to go to Plakias for the first time. What do you think, is it a good place to stay with children? How is the beach? Has anyone stayed at Anthos apartments? Are they any good? Anything else we shold think of or any recommendations? (The children are 9, 5 and 1 y.o.)

Peter and I have stayed in the Anthos apartments many times and think that they are lovely.  There is a small pool which would be ideal for the children.  It is not far to the beach and there are plenty of beach umbrellas which, in my opinion, are a must where children are concerned, as it gets very hot.  We brought out our granddaughter when she was almost 2 years old, and she loved it.  There is not too much there for older children, but it depends on their needs.  I must also say that the apartments are at the top of a very steep hill, so some fitness is required.  In our earlier days, this hill was not a problem, but nowadays, I regret to say, we do use the car!!  Have a wonderful time!!

Thanks for your reply. It sounds wonderful, and we are in a quite a good shape so I think we´ll be able to manage the hill
One more question: Is it safe for the children to play and swim in the sea at Plakias. Is the beach shallow or does it get very deep?

Hallo Ella,
since our son - and later sons  [now 7 and 3 years old ] - come with us to plakias they use to enter the sea only with this litte rubbermade inflatable "wings" around their arms and never really alone. There are areas along the plakias beach that are really going slightly down and others witch are more steeply getting deeper. Micro Amoudi and shinaria are even steeper. The beach near Frangocastello must be real baby-piscine.
Everywhere you should check the situation first. Especially when the sea´s getting rough you should consider that the rocks underneath the water might cause some blessures.
We can really recommend the local Pharmacy as they can help you quicker and cheaper than doc next door [charges 40,-€ per visit]
 

After all:  our children in all ages from 9 month till 6 years loved the place and the sea and never suffered anything worse than "grilled feet on hot sand" when they forgot their beachshoes on the way to the Donutman...

We are coming to Plakias in a couple of weeks and were wondering if there are any sports facilities, is it worth packing a tennis racket or basketball. Are there many things to keep a 17 and 14 year lad amused?

i really can't think of sports facilities in Plakias, does anyone know if you can use Hapimags facilities at Damnoni?

We had scuba equipment with us when our two sons were of the same age and a small rubber rugby ball. Great fun in/near the water. The HOT climate is not for regular tennis etc. Beach ball might be option. If they are good swimmers suggest to visit DIVE2GETHER a diving school in the centre (in a small alley, but easy to find) for a few diving/snorkling lessons. Scuba diving was keeping our sons busy the whole day.
I did not check if good/reasonable equipment was for sale in Plakias. Most likely there will be. Perhaps other members can advise on this. Bring PLENTY of sunblockers with you as it will wash off when snorkling!

I'm not absolutely sure, but I think they are open to everyone, as they are run from a large hut on the beach, not from inside the complex. I think I saw them advertised outside the taverna further along the beach.

Inside their complex they also have tennis courts, and a five-a-side pitch made of synthetic grass. They also have beach volleyball. Don't know whether these are open to non-members though.

They do indeed: it says among other things "Damnoni is the perfect place for getting to know the primeval beauty of Crete..." which is very funny if you remember how much more beautiful the bay was before they came on the scene.  Looking at the Hapimag village, "primeval" isn't exactly the first word that comes to mind.

Plakias excellent for snorkeling and diving and for diving equipment go the shop in the small street of Anso Travel and Sifis souvlaki. Here's Kalypso Rock's Palace Diving Center also the place to buy professional equipment.

we just returned from Plakias (children 4 and 1) and we stayed at Thetis.

The garden is a wonderful playground for kids with toys and so on. My 4 year old played with other kids their in garden. The greek couple running the house are like grandpa and grandma.

We liked it a lot and will be their again next year.
