Overnighter in Chania

Afternoon one and all

We normally do an overnighter in Rethymnon but have decided to try Chania next year. Has anyone done this? I believe the way to do this is to get the bus to Rethymnon and then another to Chania. I would imaging that buses to Chania are on a fairly regular basis but can anyone confirm this.

Certainly the best and probably the only way from Plakias to Hania is via Rethymnon and though I have not used it I have seen that there are frquent buses between Rethymnon and Hania .the bus timetable in Plakias seems to have times for buses all over Crete .There is also a website for Greek buses but I am afraid I do not know the URL- though I rather think there is a link from somewhere in this site

Here is a link to the bus timetable from Rethymnon to Chania. The only way to get from Plakias to Chania is via Rethymnon. The service along the north coast is a lot more frequent than from Plakias to Rethymnon, so it will be a case of picking a bus from Plakias and then just waiting for the next bus to Chania, which departs from the same bus station.

Well, I used to take the ferry fom Athens to Chania, then the taxi to Plakias. I loved that town. Preferred it from Rethimnon and Iraklion. There is a yummi Market Hall, and an interesting harbour. I'm sure, some of the scenes in Zorba the Greek are shot there.
In my wild days, I would buy a big 10 l flagon of Ouzo there. I also remember meals with little side-plates of Octopus and Olives. Make it a culinary experience and have an Ouzo on me.

We stayed in Plakias with First Choice this year and hired a car through them with Europcar, although probably more expensive than the local outlets even at 4 days for the price of 2 (196Euro's).

As part of the deal the rep Afroditi, who was an excellent rep by the way, said she could arrange a free overnight stop elsehere on the island if we wanted.

Consequently we had 2 days in the Chania area staying in an excellent First Choice appartment in Platanias just outside the main town.  The local rep said we could have stayed on for more nights but we had to get back.

By car from Plakias I would say Chania is about 1.5 hours.  The town itself is interesting particularly around the harbour and the old town back streets.

The beaches on the western side are fantastic, we particularly liked Falisarna.  The Akrotiri peninsula has a nice beach at the extreme end called Stavros.

For 2 weeks I would still prefer Plakias to the Chania resorts, which are very touristy, but it makes for a great diversion and change of scenery.
