Argyroupolis-Accomodation and Tips ?
« on: June 11, 2013, 10:29:32 AM »
Hi There,

My idea is that I will venture out to Argyroupolis on my trip-does anyone have any tips etc though ?

I think I will be looking to stay 2 nights so I can fully investigate what sounds like a fascinating village/area (only having read what the Rough Guide says).

The bus seems to go twice a day from Rethymnon-early morning and late afternoon-thats a tricky decision on which bus to go for also.

Anyone know of good accomodation-or is there plenty-I am guessing that there are plenty of daytrippers but maybe not that busy with overnight stays-but I could be wrong.

Thanks !

We go there frequently on day trips by car. Very friendly place and there should be some accommodation. The guy who runs the cosmetics shop under the archway at the top village is exceptionally helpful and will surely be able to advise you.

Last time we went at least 3 of the "trout" restaurants with the water features in the valley below appeared to have gone bust (2 years ago but we were not out of season). That was the first time that the difficulty with the economy showed. I second the comment of John about the cosmetics shop.

I hope KOYNDOYROS Traditional tavern. Argyroupolis springs (Agia Dynami) has not closed or the Aghia Dymanis Taverna.

Did you drive down the mighty hairy road to Frangocastello? Hat tip if you did! Only time I have ever been scared on a mountain road in 40 years driving!

Driven up and down this road many times. Super road. Not particularly scary if you take care and sort  of try to ensure you meet oncoming vehicles on the hairpins (widest bits) - Kilikratis pass. Finest road I've ever driven on for spectacle.

Yes John, a fun road to drive up and down with great views along the way. Take care though if you are not a confident driver. It's a bit like a smaller, narrower and slower Cretan version of the infamous Pikes Peak hillclimb in the US:)
