Plakias 1995
« on: August 11, 2003, 02:41:25 PM »
I visited Plakias in May 1995, staying at studios that overlooked Kostas-Chrysoulla apartments (I can't remember their name but think the Tour Operator was First Choice). I thought Plakias was really excellent. I am always reluctant to go back to a resort; however I'm now running out of new ones in Greece that I want to visit (Greek holiday No 25 coming up). I remember Plakias as having a good beach (best at the east end) with another excellent one 1-2 miles to the west. The resort had a nice feel to it (definitely no lager louts), had a good selection of tavernas (including a very friendly gyros pitta bar on the seafront), adequate mini markets for buying provisions, and had really excellent walks to the east, north and west. There seemed to be some major construction being started at the beach to the east as large drainage pipes were about to be installed.

Could some of the Plakias afficionados please let me know how the resort has changed in 8 years so I can gauge whether I will enjoy my return visit when I make it. Some of my other favourite Greek resorts are Petra/Molyvos (Lesvos), Scala (Kefallonia), Tingaki (Kos), Agios Georgious (Corfu), and Paralio Astros (Pelopponese).

Thanks in advance.

Mike,

You will recognise today's Plakias instantly as the resort that you enjoyed in 1995.  Very little changes.  True there is now a proper Post Office, a couple of ATM machines, internet access at Ostraco and Alianthos and some of the dirt roads are now tarmac.  But the change process is so slow and undramatic that you, like the rest of us, will feel completely at home as soon as you enter the village.

Go for it!

Regards,

Allan

Couldn't have put it better myself Alan.
I guess though that someone who has been away for nearly 20 years will see more differences than us regulars who have just got used to the slow rate of change.
For me, the heart of the village is still the same - and that's what matters!

Well said Allan and John.  Couldn't agree more.  I've been to 3 of the 5 places mentioned by Mike, Scala (Kefallonia), Tingaki (Kos), Agios Georgious (Corfu), and one of them used to be my favourite but it's not any more.  Guess where is?

Mike, don't tell anyone else about Plakias.

Hi Mike

We first visited Plakias in 1993 and have only missed 2 years since then.
It really is like 'going home'. Very little has changed, thankfully, and the chill factor is amazing !
Plakias is the only place I feel happy to return to time after time.
Go for it - you know you want to!!!

Regards
Lin

Many thanks for the useful information. You've convinced me that I'll still like Plakias and I definitely intend to return. I'll certainly be consulting the Forums before booking.

Congratulations on the website, Ostraco. I wish all Greek resorts had one- it would make researching holidays much easier.

I think you refer to the Ariadne Apts.We used them all the time during the 90s,They where taken out of the english brochures towards 98/99,Top floor rooms 9-12 must have had the biggest balcony,s in Plakias .
