Little Train

A few years ago there used to be a small imitation train which ran up to Myrtios(?) above Plakias. My wife has always been on about using it to go up there in the evening for supper (a bit touristy - but there you are)! Is it still running in September (or at any other time)?

Cheers, Roger

Sorry to disappoint you, but there is no train now.  Sounds fun!  That explains the shelter on the front which looks like a "train" stop.  How long ago did it run?
I saw there was one in Bali bravely pulling up the steep hills when we had our compulsory trip round the tourist resorts of the north on our way back to the airport.

The train was operated by Alianthus Car Hire and I heard they moved it to Athens. The engine was under specified for the many very steep hills around Plakias and breakdowns were common.

That makes sense - there are now two little trains running around the Monostiraki, Ancient Agora, Thissio, the Acropolis and the Temple of the Winds in Athens. The service is quite popular and she has been on that one as well (I must admit that I quite enjoyed it as well)!

Thanks,  Roger

I think its last season was 2005. It was not running when I visited in September 2006.

Thank goodness the horses are there no more. The profound suffering ,lack of water and proper care led to them being removed. I sincerely hope they have gone to a more caring destination (but I fear they have not.)

I don't know where you got that information from. The horses belong to Nikos of Nikos Souflaki, next to the post office and he would be most offended to hear those comments. He only stopped doing the horse and carriages to reopen his restaurant after he sublet it for a season.

I work with an international Animal Welfare organisation and regardless of who owns the horses in question , one of the concerned charities was inundated with concerned enquiries and complaints regarding the conditions and suffering   the Plakias horses had to endure . The lack of readily available, large quantities of water which a horse requires and no shade to stand underneath. . I saw for myself their discomfort while standing for very long periods in the blazing sun.

Your remarks are , up to a point , correct , and I understand the person responsible has to defend his actions but there is much more to this than meets the uninformed eye.
