Buses from Chora Skafion
« on: May 21, 2007, 10:38:24 AM »
Hi,
Myself and my wife will be travelling along Crete's south coast by boat next week. We hope to catch a bus from Chora Skafion to Plakias on Saturday or Sunday the 5/6th of June.

Can anyone tell me if the bus to Plakias is still in operation and if so what the time table for the beginning of June is? If this service no longer runs what is the best alternative way of reaching Plakias from Chora Skafion?

Thanks,
Saul

There are posts somewhere on this forum about the bus no longer running.
The search facility should find them given patience and cunning.

Assuming you're travelling from Paleohora you'll have plenty of time to 'suss out' your fellow travellers and perhaps wangle a lift from someone with a car who is also going to Plakias.

A taxi is the alternative, either booked in advance (see this thread for details) or found when you get to Sfakia.

If you go to Paleohora first and then use the ferry to move along the coast the only problem we have encountered is arriving at Chora Skafion mid day to find no taxis (All on airport duty) and having to wait around until early evening to move onto Plakias. I think it was a Tuesday last time, of course if you haven't been to Chora Skafion before that's not a problem but this year when we do it we will get a later ferry from Loutro.

Saul,

I am planning to do the same journey (after taking the ferry from Sougia) somehwere around the 16th June.

The bus from Chora Sfakion to Plakias seems to be on and off. When it does run these days I think it is only in mid-summer, and this doesn't include June. There was no bus in June two years ago.

I have done the same journey twice before and never had to use the bus anyway. The first time I shared a taxi with 3 other people, and the second time I got a lift with some people who had a hire car on the ferry. This is easier to do if you are alone than a couple. Probably if there are two of you, you will need to go by taxi. The alternative is go by bus from Chora Sfakion to Vrisses (between Chania and Rethymnon), Vrisses to Rethymnon and Rethymnon to Plakias, but you will be lucky to do this in one day if you have arrived on the ferry.

Edit:
I didn't see Stuart's posting before typing the above. It has given me a thought, though. I will take details of Zak's taxi office with me in case I need a taxi and there are none at Chora Sfakion.

Thanks a million for all your advice. I had seen the previous message about the discontinuation of the bus service but since that was posted in 2005 was not sure if it still applied.

It is our first visit to Chora Skafion so it will not be a problem staying overnight there and it's all part of the fun. It's been a few years since we were in Plakias though so looking forward to getting back there. Can't wait!
