First Timers - Just Got Back
« on: June 24, 2008, 12:14:41 AM »
Hello All.  We have just returned back from our two week holiday in Plakias and it was everything that we expected and more besides.  Thanks to all those who  gave us helpful guidance for the beaches, etc. The first week was distinctly cooler (relatively speaking) than the second but still very nice but the second week hotted up significantly.  We even had a few spots of rain as we walked down the track to Micro Am. beach whereupon Maria proudly announced that at her beach everyone gets a free shower on arrival!  The second week ended with a predicted four day gale blowing from the West it seemed, and it was really strong - strong enough for the Plakias beach sun embrellas to be taken down.  So over to Souda we went and it was relatively sheltered there and it was a good alternative to Plakias. Then the fire started - about a half mile into the gorge at the back of Souda the flames were pretty big and could be seen back at Plakias.  Still the fire chopper and plane provided something to look up at as we "cooked" on the beach!  Yes indeed Plakias is a "very special" place and it has totally won us over.  Will it change with the development?  Local opinion seems divided but on balance the locals we spoke to thought that it would not. We managed to speak to a few Forum members but if anyone spotted the two fifty something nutters body boarding in the big surf on Plakias far end w/c June 9th - then that was us!  Hopefully I've attached a few piccies correctly that show Souda and a view from the Plakias Bay Hotel.  Yes, we can confidently say we are Plakias Bay lovers and I'm sure we'll be back asap!  The PB Hotel was a great place to stay with Aris and Natasha being so very friendly and helpful and of course Bouzouki the hotel "security".

Glad you had such a good time and refreshing to know that newcomers do indeed find the place to their liking - as we would expect -but sometimes I worry that we might be over biased. We are off in Mid Sept to early Oct and are looking forward to it for the umpteenth (11th) time though we are still relative newcomers.

Glad you had a great time, the beginning of another repeat visitor?

I too worry that we over-hype the place and that one day someone will go (partly based on our enthusiasm) and absolutely hate it!

We've often asked people what they thought of a place but, if we decide to give it a try we're well aware that our opinion could be completely different to theirs. Two examples - we thought Paleochora was not a patch on Plakias whereas others love it as much. Also, we loved Alghero in Sardinia whereas a couple I know that have just come back thought it was dirty and uninteresting.

We have also just got back from Plakias after traveling alnight, everything is as good as ever,No horse and carriage this year but personally I think its a good thing, the weather was excellent, the 6 Geese that were there are now down to one the poor thing walks up and down the front all day as if shouting for the others he goes from the harbour to alianthos and back all day,the thing is it walks in the middle of the road causing major traffic jams at times, we also witnessed the fire which went from 9.30 to 7.0clock with 3 planes and a helicopter to put it out.we also arranged to meet the Traveling Gran (Heather) on the first Tuesday but we must have missed each other, anyway need a sleep just now before back to work Alex

There were a lot of geese at the back of the village in the stream, I saw them as I crossed the bridge last year. Perhaps they've gone there!!

Any tavernas with "Roast Goose" as a new item on the menu?

I don't want to upset any animal lovers so I'll pass on this one. However, I had goat this year in Mousses for the first time. It came cooked in what I can only describe as a paper bag. Don't ask me how the bag didn't get charred. Quite nice meat; rather milder in flavour than I expected.

Mike

ps. all you recent returners, how about writing some reviews for the Article System. For the size of our Forum the number of reviews is a bit pathetic.

Pardon   Oh yeah, totally aggree.

Had the goat in Lysseous a couple of years ago, very nice it was to  . Nothing to rave over though, Lito had it on the menu, cause she'd run out of lamb.
