Decent road map
« on: May 07, 2009, 04:53:36 PM »
Hi everyone. Not long to our holiday, looking forward to our first ice cold Mythos. Anyway, where is it possible to obtain a decent road map of the area for when we go sightseeing and beach finding in our hire car.
Cheers John & debbie

One of the best maps we have ever bought is the Rough Guide Map of Crete. It is very clear, very detailed and printed on rip-proof, waterproof Polyart "paper"
Scale is 1:140,000. Very high quality map. We have bought nearly every map available over the years and we like this one the best.

Price in UK (is/was (?) £5.99. ISBN 1-84353-239-5 - distributed by The Penguin Group

www.roughguides.com might give you a clue as to where to get one - yes - have a look at :-

Our favourite not-map is "Unexplored Crete" isbn 960-8481-24-4. Its actually a set of trips written for adventurous motorcyclists but you can do lots of the trips by car. Also stacks of backgound info on things en route. Hope it's still around - our copy seems to have cost 3000Dr - so maybe we should be looking out for a more up  to date copy - not everything's as described in the book

We found some very good maps in the local shops last year, based on recent satellite data so they were accurate and up-to-date. Unfortunately, they were not laminated so the one we got cracked at the folds after the first day of use. The laminated maps, on the other hand, didn't show the small roads we all love to explore.

Hi
Thanks for all the advice so far. I think we will look for a map when we get there or hope we get a decent one with the hire car.
Cheers

If you want the map for general use whilst out and about, I agree with John, the Roughguide item is waterproof and tear resistant, so takes the sort of abuse a map gets whilst spread on the bonnet during a typically windy day in Southern Crete. A very good scale too.

Currently available on www.dvd.co uk for four pounds, forty one pence, including delivery.

The hire car maps are sort of ok if you don't know about anything different. Sometimes inaccurate (not often) but definitely lacking in detail - required as you get to know Crete better. The Rough Guide one (don't be put off by description it is very high quality indeed) and as reported by by Mike (for price) really is too good to miss.

Well Done, We use the rough guide too, also use INSIGHT Map of Crete 1:225000 which is flexi and waterproof.

Hope Debbie is better map reading than my missus is

Hi Graeme
Debbie is in fact a crap map reader. Her normal excuse is "if i look at the map i feel sick". Are all women useless at map reading (not meant to be sexist)
Cheers
John & his ex Debbie (if she gets to read this)

Mrs. Noopsy also falls into the above category but to be fair, she was better at driving hired cars than me.  So we had an arrangement: she did the driving and I did the navigating!

Καλισπέρα σας!

I don't know if this thread is still active and if it still makes sense to reply, but I wanted to add my €0.02 on the road map issue.
I have long struggled with several road maps (Harms ic, Road editions), but as soon as I was trying to navigate on gravel roads, I got lost because not all intersections were marked and the course of the road was not even close to accurate.
However, earlier this year I have found a reference to the Road & Touring Atlas Crete by Anavasi (could have been in this forum, but I'm not sure), have ordered it and it looks pretty useful. It's 1:50000.
I have checked some routes in Google Earth and the course of the roads I checked really matches.
I think it's good value for €18, and €6 shipping is OK (considering there were €7.5 in stamps on the envelope) (to Austria, I'm not sure about the shipping costs to GB).
If you want to check it out: http://www.anavasi.gr/en/greece.php?c=13 the third map from the top.
I haven't checked it on site yet, but am looking forward to doing so in September.

Καλινύχτα σας,
Ανδρέας
